Story

At 6am on the 24th July 2011 the following team will undertake the Three Peaks Challenge.

The Team consists of:

Walkers: Stewart & Louise Eastbrook, Mark Lawrence, Gareth Allen, Jamie Bond, Alex, Jason and Jack Allen, Louise Fahy,

Drivers: Norman Eastbrook,

Supporters : Sue Eastbrook, Joanne Lawrence, Natalie Allen, Bev & Charlotte Gaddes

The National Three Peaks Challenge involves climbing the highest mountains in, Scotland, England and Wales. These are: Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon. We will walk a total of 27 miles, climb a total height of around 10,000 feet, and the distance to be covered between the mountains is some 450 miles and all within 24hours.

The Challenge will raise money for the Institute of Cancer Research.

It will be specifically channeled into the research lead by Prof Ros Eeles and the cancer genetics teams into the breast cancer gene - BRCA1, and the work they undertake at the Royal Marsden Hospital London.

BRCA1 is a breast cancer gene. Individuals with a mutation in this gene have a higher risk of developing breast cancer and at an earlier age. Women who have a BRCA1 gene mutation have a 60-90% risk of developing breast cancer.

Men who have this mutation have a slight increase risk of breast & prostate cancer.

The Translational Cancer Genetics Team aims to translate laboratory findings in genetic predisposition to cancer, to the clinic. The focus is on predisposition to prostate and breast cancers.

The laboratory component of the research programme involves the search for prostate cancer predisposition genes and studies of the molecular changes in familial and early onset prostate cancer.

There is also a laboratory programme in the molecular aspects of predisposition to breast cancer relevant to clinical practice. The clinical component of the research encompasses: targeted screening, prevention and the application of cancer genetics to cancer management.

There is close interaction with the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and in addition to studies in the management of individuals with a predisposition to breast and prostate cancer.
