COMPETITION FOR BUILDING A COMMUNITY SURVIVAL CABIN: a project on the intersection of art, architecture and social change

Although benefiting a lot from a major redevelopment in the area one wish of the community of Efford is still not fulfilled: the one for a Community Centre to offer a versatile programme from and for the residents.
To support the residents in addressing their wish to the local authorities and to raise awareness to the need for a Community Centre we now seek to install a visual representation in the public: the Community Survival Cabin!

The cabin is going to serve as a temporary office for Efford’s community coordinator in the time frame of at least a year. The community center of Efford is not build yet, but a free lance community coordinator will work from the cabin as his/her office space.

The cabin should be easy to build, function as an office space and include a little coffee kitchen. The materials it is made of should be sustainable as well as cheap (we encourage recycling and DIY approaches). Students are free to choose how they want to go about this challenge. Our aim is to provide a cabin to Efford’s community that is ready for use from the beginning of June. The most innovative, practical and realistic idea will be selected and built by the winning team with the help of the community during May 2011. The city will allow to place the chosen project at an empty spot on Torridge Way and the new community coordinator will be working part-time in the winning team’s cabin. Building material can be sponsored by Travis Perkins at 178, Rendle Street.
