Camera enthusiast captures Lakeside cover From the editor… The Great Blue Heron stood majestically upon a warning buoy anchored on Logan Martin Lake as if he belonged there. From his perch, there was no end to what he may have seen that day — passing boats and anglers aplenty — but he was probably searching more for the fish just below the water’s surface from his lofty lookout. Suzanne Alverson of Talladega spotted the scene, grabbed a camera and captured it. She shared it with us on a companion Web site, www.bamascenes.ning.com, and it now graces the cover of this month’s Lakeside. Above, is another Alverson shot of the bird taking flight. She and camera enthusiasts up and down the shores of Logan Martin Lake are in the perfect place to capture scenes like this for the rest of us. There never seems to be a shortage of them. Story by Brandon Fincher Photos by Bob Crisp If you live in Sylacauga and don’t know Judy Hartsfield, there’s still a good chance you’ve seen one of her paintings or prints. She estimates she has painted at least 20 buildings in the Sylacauga area over her distinguished career for fundraisers or as commissions. “When we had the Chalaka (art) show here, the Rec. Department was very good, as was the whole town of Sylacauga — we had so many sponsors that would donate money. They would buy the paintings at the show, and they would put them in different places.” The paintings can still be spotted at many area businesses, banks, schools and city buildings. As the youngest of nine children growing up in

Birmingham, Hartsfield was able to take advantage of her sister’s love of art and begin to develop her talent from a young age. “She was an adult, and before I ever started grammar school, I was about 5, she had me painting with her good brushes and everything.” Hartsfield still has some of her sister’s paintings hanging in her home. And she never lost interest in art from those early days onward. “I went all the way through school, and in fact, one of my teachers told me, ‘If you pay more attention to your books than you do your drawing you may make something of yourself.’ I attended Phillips High School in Birmingham and graduated. I actually majored in art. I took art, which

was a minor subject, for two periods and got a major credit for it.” She attended art school at Gulf State Commercial Art School. The same sister who had gotten her started in painting opened a photography studio which also piqued her interest. Knowing about photography and painting can benefit an artist’s work in both areas, she said. “It helps with the eye for composition and the lighting and all of that.” It wasn’t long, though, before she married her husband, Virgil, and started a family. “I had four boys, so my art I kind of put on the backburner until they got a little bigger.” The family moved to South Carolina before returning to Alabama and settling in Sylacauga in 1960. “About 1970 or somewhere along in there, I started going to art shows and got on the art circuit. When my husband retired, we traveled a lot. We actually had about 30 years of doing art shows. When we first started doing them, we opened up a frame shop in the basement. I did the painting, and he did the framing. “We just really enjoyed it and met so many nice

people in our travels. When we had the art show here, I’d feed all the artists that would come into town.” Hartsfield said Sylacauga’s Chalaka Arts and Crafts Show was one of the best. “When Virgil and I were traveling, doing shows — I’m not bragging — but we did get a lot of very good artists to come to the show here.” Though Chalaka is no more, Hartsfield is still involved with art programs in Sylacauga like the ArtPartners Auction, where local artists work with clients at the ARC of South Talladega County to create paintings to sell. The money raised goes to fund the art program at the Comer Museum, where ARC clients take art lessons. When Hartsfield gets to paint for her own enjoyment, she enjoys painting seascapes, flowers and birds. “I’m very much a realist,” she explained. She said she usually painted with watercolors when she was doing shows but has gotten into acrylics more in the past few years. “I paint a little bit every day. Our frame shop is

closed now, but Skip (her oldest son) does frame my work.” Her son Chris is also a highly respected artist who now lives in Daphne. “People say, ‘Oh, you must have taught Chris.’ I didn’t teach Chris anything. I’m a little bit country, and he’s rock and roll.” After so many years of painting, Hartsfield said she still enjoys painting by trying out different colors and ideas. She has kept stacks of photographs to use as subject matter. “I may not necessarily paint it as I took the photograph, but I may just pick one little something out of it and create a painting.” Hartsfield’s devotion to painting can be a lesson for us all that doing something you love can keep you interested for a lifetime.

Neither rain nor ice can keep us off the lake

I got up at 7 a.m. and was out the door at about 8 a.m., heading to pick up Bobby McDaniel of Lincoln. It’s been a couple of months since we have paddled together. Bobby called me earlier in the week to see if I had an upcoming paddling trip planned. I did. The plan was to paddle up Dye Creek as far as we could that morning, ahead of an approaching front which was bringing rain to the area. Only the week before, temperatures had dipped into the single digits, so we took advantage of the 50-degree “heat wave.” Bobby told me he only had one

more week at work before his company closed its doors. He had worked for his company 24 years. He plans to take advantage of the break to paddle the entire Alabama Scenic River Trail. “I’m leaving March 12,” he said. Bobby is actually going to start his trip in Georgia, where the Coosa River begins, in downtown Rome, Ga. “I expect to complete the trip in about a month,” said Bobby, who just turned 57. “I’m not rushing it. I want to enjoy myself. It will give me some time to figure out where I’m going (job-wise).”

Bobby recently ordered a 16-and-a-half-foot touring kayak for the trip. The longer boat will provide extra storage space in the stern and bow. He’s been paddling daily to get in shape for the morethan-700-mile trip and is always ready to go on my short excursions down Logan Martin Lake. On this trip we were leaving from a slough off Seddon Shores Road. Bill and Lynn Ervin allowed us to use their waterfront lot. “What’s that guy doing?” Bobby asked, pointing down the slough. I explained that was Dr. Joseph Barra, who was building a nesting platform – his second — for a pair of Osprey. “You want to go down there and see?” I asked Bobby. I grabbed my camera, and we headed there before setting out on our trip. Bobby talked with Joseph while I walked further. I wanted to take a picture of the Osprey platform that Joseph already had completed. It was neat, and sure enough a pair of Ospreys had built a nest right on top of the platform. “He was a super nice guy,” Bobby would say later about Joseph. “I told him if he needs any help lifting it (the new platform), to give me a call.” Joseph joked that if they kept putting up Osprey platforms and attracting these birds of prey, people would

start calling the area Osprey Bay. We had to cut our visit short with Joseph. I wanted to beat the approaching rain. It was cool, cloudy and windy when we paddled away, and by the time we had reached the mouth of Dye Creek, it started sprinkling. It sprinkled off and on that day, a minor inconvenience. Sometimes this type weather brings solitude that a warm sunny day doesn’t always promise. And it was nice just talking and catching up with Bobby. As we entered Dye Creek, we heard some loud booms across the main river channel. “Duck hunters,” I told Bobby. Just the week before, a cold blast of winter moved across the country. It also reached the South, and we saw sustained low temperatures for more than a week. I suspect the extreme cold weather pushed migratory birds further south and into Alabama. About everywhere we looked there were ducks and Canada geese, and despite a week of warm weather, there were still large chunks of ice on the lake. The ice took me by surprise. I really wasn’t paying much attention and bam, I ran into a chunk. It was a large area of solid ice. I’d say the ice was thicker than an inch.

We paddled around it and continued our trip. Dye Creek has a mixture of residential and wooded areas. The water was low enough where we saw the large pipe that pumps treated water from the Dye Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant to the main channel of the river. Canada geese seem to congregate along this big round pipe. I took a picture of one goose resting on top of the pipe, probably on the lookout for some lunch. Bobby was paddling close to the north shore of the creek when he yelled that he had gotten stuck in the muddy bottom of the

shallow creek. There was also another big chunk of ice just ahead of us, two paddling hazards to keep watch for this time of year. I thought there was just enough room between the pipe and the ice to continue our trip, but then my boat hit bottom. It was time to turn back around. We had paddled about as far as we could up the waterway. I would like to return to the area when itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a bit warmer and the water level is up. People say itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pretty all the way up Dye Creek, and from what I saw, it is, with an abundance of waterfowl. So, until next time, have a safe and wonderful time on the lake.

Caterers reveal secret to special Valentine’s Day dinners

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and love is in the air. The smell of good food should be, too, say local caterers who offer a few tips for that perfect Valentine’s Day meal. Polly Mitchell of Café Royale in Talladega and Sundi and Tim Hawkins of D’oros Catering in Pell City prepared a few dishes and talked about a few more when thinking of the perfect Valentine’s Day meal. Mitchell suggested a roasted asparagus salad to start the evening, with mixed baby greens; asparagus tips coated in olive oil, fresh cracked black pepper and salt and roasted at 400 degrees for about

20 minutes; a Chardonnay dressing made from cheese and wine; and a sprinkling of freshly grated parmesan. She loves to make a filling entrée such as beef bourguignon for the main course. Here is the best recipe Mitchell has found.

Filet of beef bourguignon Ingredients: Four 6-7 ounce 1”thick filets Kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper 2 T excellent olive oil (should taste smooth alone or with bread) 4 pieces bacon, diced 3 garlic cloves, minced (fresh is very key)

1 cup Cabernet 1 cup beef stock ½ T tomato paste 2 twigs fresh thyme 1 small bag frozen pearl onions 5 carrots peeled and sliced one inch thick 2 T butter, unsalted (not margarine) 1 T all-purpose flour 2-4 ounces fresh mushroom slices (button mushrooms are also ok) Directions: 1. Sauté mushrooms in 1 T olive oil and 1 T butter for 5 minutes then set aside. 2. Rinse and dry filets. Salt and pepper on one side. 3. In a sauté or frying pan, heat the olive oil on medium-high heat until it moves around

the pan. Gently place filets seasoned side down on oil. Sauté 2-3 minutes. Meanwhile, salt and pepper the top side. Note: It’s OK if you miss the filet when sprinkling. The little crispies in the pan will flavor the sauce. 4. Flip the filet; it should be browned on the bottom. Sauté for two minutes. Stand them up on their sides and brown all around. Remove filets to a clean platter. 5. Cook diced bacon in the same pan on mediumlow heat for five minutes, stirring until browned and crisp. Remove to platter with filets. Drain bacon fat keeping just a little. Sauté garlic for one minute. 6. Take a sip of the Cabernet to check the quality! 7. Step back and pour wine into pan. Scrape bottom with silicone spatula or wooden spoon. Cook on high heat for one minute. Add beef stock, tomato paste, thyme, ½ t of salt and ¼ t of pepper. Bring to boil and cook uncovered for about 10 minutes. Remove twigs. Add onions and carrots. Cook on low for 20 minutes or until carrots are tender. 8. Mash butter and flour together until pasty and whisk into sauce. Cook on medium heat for two minutes. Add filets, bacon and mushrooms to the sauce and vegetables and cover. Heat on stove top or oven for about 20 minutes until inside of meat reaches 135 degrees for medium. Or use a thermometer to cook meat to level of doneness you prefer.

“Or you can order one jar of Beef Bourguignon from Williams Sonoma,” Mitchell said. “Sauté the filets as in my recipe, add the sauce and heat until it reaches desired doneness, throw a little crispy bacon in that you bought that morning whenever you bought your breakfast. Dirty some pans, sprinkle a little flour on your shirt and she’ll love you forever. Use your spare time to dip one perfect strawberry in store-bought chocolate. You are now a love god or goddess.” Mitchell’s own husband tried a similar technique one year for their anniversary. She said she came home to find the sink full of dirty dishes, a recipe book open on the counter and a beautiful table set with beef Wellington. However, once she looked closer, she saw that the recipe book was upside down and her husband confessed he had bought the meal from a market down the street that was running a special on Wellington. For dessert, Mitchell likes some of the Valentine’s Day classics such as red velvet cake and chocolate-dipped strawberries. A chocolate truffle wouldn’t hurt the meal either. Nora Martin, a long-time employee at the Stafford House in Pell City, suggests pairing a merlot or a Cabernet with a beef dish such as Mitchell’s. She also said the store currently has a red sparkling wine that is sweeter and has done well around Valentine’s Day in the past. Some of Mitchell’s personal favorite foods for Valentine ’s Day, besides beef bourguignon, include a Very Berry Salad with raspberries, strawberries, blueberries and the occasional blackberries mixed in with green leaf, butter and romaine lettuces. All that is drizzled with a homemade raspberry vinaigrette made from balsamic vinegar and raspberry jelly. She also enjoys pan sautéed grouper, crabmeat stuffed shrimp and one chocolate-dipped strawberry. For the seafood dishes, Mitchell combines the steps to

preparing the grouper and shrimp in the following recipe.

Pan sautéed grouper and crabmeat stuffed shrimp Ingredients Grill Mates original recipe-found in refrigerated section of seafood department 2 grouper filets (fresh frozen OK, thaw night before) 2 jumbo shrimp 4 ounces lump crab meat, chilled remoulade sauce Directions 1. Squeeze Grill Mates on top of fish. Spread with fingers or knife. Heat some olive oil in frying pan. Place fish, sauce side down, in pan. Spread the new top side with Grill Mates. Cook about 6 minutes each side. (Less dense fish such as tilapia will be about 3 minutes each side.) 2. Split shrimp almost in half on underneath side, keeping back portion intact. (This is butterflying the shrimp.) Spread both sides of shrimp with Grill Mates. Cook in same pan without flipping, about 5 minutes or until firm and pinky orange. 3. Plate. Spoon heaping amount of crab meat into shrimp. 4. Plate grouper, drizzle with remoulade, top with more crab meat. Garnish plate with stuffed shrimp. 5. Café Remoulade: Whisk five-grain mustard and Chardonnay dressing together, adding Chardonnay as needed. Drizzle and whisk to desired thinness. 6. Serve remaining Chardonnay!

The Hawkinses also created a hearty Valentine’s meal with seared scallops over mixed baby greens and drizzled with a citrus vinaigrette, filet mignon, roasted garlic mashed potatoes, roasted asparagus with cherry tomatoes and a strawberry almond chocolate torte for dessert. Sundi said most of their dishes could easily be recreated without an exact recipe. The scallops and filet mignon can be cooked to the doneness you prefer based on the size of the scallops and filets you find. The citrus vinaigrette may also easily be replaced with fresh lime or lemon juice to give the seafood that citrus flavor. Mashed potatoes are so common now, you can buy them in tubs at the grocery store. But your family’s recipe for homemade mashed potatoes will work just as well as the Hawkinses’ dish if it’s the recipe you enjoy. “We tried to stick to general recipes that would be something everybody liked, but not be boring,” Sundi said. “We wanted them to have appeal for men and women and appeal to the eye.” Tim added that “You wouldn’t eat these sorts of foods every day, but these are some of my personal favorites.” Sundi said their idea for a dessert came from the idea that everybody has to have chocolate and strawberries for Valentine’s Day.

Strawberry Almond Chocolate Torte Ingredients: 10 egg whites 1 cup all-purpose flour 2/3 cup baking cocoa 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 1/2 cups sugar 2/3 cup cold brewed coffee 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon almond extract Filling: 1 cup sliced fresh strawberries 1/2 teaspoon almond extract 1 (8 ounce) container frozen reduced-fat frozen whipped topping, thawed Chocolate ganache icing: 9 ounces of chocolate chips 1 cup heavy cream Garnish: 1/4 cup slivered almonds 6 fresh strawberries, sliced into thick slices Directions Let egg whites stand in a large mixing bowl at room temperature for 30 minutes. Coat the bottom of three, 9-inch pans with cooking spray; line with waxed paper. Spray the paper with nonstick cooking spray, dust with flour and set aside. Sift the flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt together. Beat egg whites on medium speed until soft peaks form. Gradually beat in sugar, about two tablespoons at a time, on high until stiff glossy peaks form and sugar is dissolved.

Combine coffee and extracts. Fold dry ingredients into egg mixture alternately with coffee mixture. Spread into prepared pans. Bake at 375 degrees F for 10-15 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes before removing from pans to wire racks. Gently peel off waxed paper. Cool completely. In a bowl, gently mash the strawberries, then stir in almond extract. Fold in whipped topping. Place one cake layer on a serving platter; top with half of the filling. Repeat layers. Top with remaining cake layer. In a double boiler, melt chocolate chips and add cream. Whisk until smooth. Frost top of cake. Garnish with almonds and strawberries. Chill for at least one hour before cutting. Martin suggests a Riesling or white wine to pair with Sundi and Tim’s scallops and a wine made from moscato grapes to go with their strawberry almond chocolate torte. “Wine is subjective,” Martin said. “People drink what they enjoy. And wine can fit into any budget because there are good wines available in all price ranges.” Sundi and Tim remember times earlier in their relationship when Tim had not quite mastered the art of cooking seafood and Sundi had not determined all her likes and dislikes in the world of food. “I tried to fix her swordfish one Valentine’s Day and it was the most horrible thing,” Tim said. “That was in our first home. I ruined the fish and just threw it off the back porch.” Sundi remembers a trip to Gatlinburg that didn’t go as planned. The couple cooked lamb chops and had caviar to have a fancy dinner that year – but Sundi discovered she didn’t like lamb that night. And she had an allergic reaction to the dog another couple brought to the cabin they stayed in, making her eyes swell up and her skin break out in hives. They left the cabin the next day to return home. “We started out cooking for family and friends, and I love planning parties,” Sundi said. “I was working at the museum at the time, but we realized we should get into catering, and we have loved it for the past year and a half.”

The venue changed from house to house in Birmingham during those early years, and then we settled on the lake, an aesthetic place even during the colder months of the year. My friend Cookie bought the house next door as a weekender, and her sunroom overlooking Logan Martin Lake makes the perfect assembly area for pan after pan of Baklava. Pam Foote get together during the holidays with lots of food, fun and spirits as the main course with plenty of laughter shared throughout. Everyone in this group knows their place. My sister, Vickie, is the task-master, overseeing the process from start to finish. “Too much butter,” she tells me as I coat each delicate layer of the paper-thin phyllo dough with a pastry brush. “Watch the nuts — not too many,” she cautions Cookie as she spreads one of the center layers with the pecan, sugar, cinnamon and clove mixture. Christy lends moral support, calling her, “Daskala,” which is Greek for teacher, and keeping us entertained with her unmistakable wit. Chum generally arrives late, but with plenty of goodies to make up for her tardiness. There’s chocolate-covered Bing cherries, a new dip and her famous koulourakia, Greek butter cookies for coffee the next morning. Spending the night has become part of the tradition. And Pam acts as a perfect hostess, making sure the hors’ doeuvres and beverages are free flowing, and dinner is right on time when we finish. These “girls” have traveled the world together — mountains and beach closer to home for more times than we can count, the Cayman Islands in the Caribbean, Puerto Vallarta in Mexico and, of course, Greece. But when we want to just kick back and relax and enjoy each other’s company, lakeside is our usual port of call. It has that calming, getaway feeling — even if you’re at home or just next door. And surrounded by your closest friends, it just doesn’t seem to get any better than that.

Retired educators living ‘rich’ lives along the water

They found the quiet, the neighborhood, the trees and the space they needed. And Frank and Davonia Buck will quickly say they have no thoughts of going anywhere else. The spot they found among the many communities located on and around Logan Martin Lake is in the Eagle Point development in Pell City. With the backdrop of Logan Martin and their large lot and spacious home, the Bucks say they’re most happy with the choice they made 12 years ago. Theirs was the first home built in the development, nestled adjacent to a growth of oaks on Eagle Point Lane. Now, Buck said, there are more than 100 homes in the neighborhood, but the atmosphere of the area remains quiet and relaxing. Both the Bucks are retired educators.

Buck retired last summer from the Talladega School System after 29 years in education. He started his teaching career in Montgomery, where he was band director, and also worked in the Vestavia Hills and Shelby County school systems before joining the Talladega City School System. Buck spent 12 years as principal for Graham Elementary School in Talladega and retired as curriculum coordinator for the school system. Mrs. Buck has been retired for three years from the Vestavia Hills system, where she worked in guidance and counseling. The Bucks are both musical, and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s through their music they met, both being part of an ensemble playing for an Easter cantata at a church in Moody.

In addition to her work in guidance and counseling, Mrs. Buck was a professional clarinet player and accompanied orchestras for Broadway shows on tour, playing for casts that included names like Rex Harrison and Jim Nabors. She also played in orchestras for the Ringling Brothers Circus through the years and with the Alabama Symphony. The Bucks share their lake community home with two of their four-footed rescues, a pair of Shelties named Skipper and Bonnie Lass. The Bucks are involved in Sheltie rescues, and one of the reasons their home suits their needs so well is how it can accommodate a dog in need.

There’s ample room in the fenced back yard for turn out, and it’s in Mrs. Buck’s favorite part of the house she can make a rescued dog comfortable and part of the household. She doesn’t hesitate telling what she likes best about her house. “Here, I’ll show you,” she says, leading the way from the front entry down the hall to the master bedroom section of the house. “All this space,” she said, showing the bedroom and bath that stretch across the back of the house. There’s a triple tray ceiling that adds to the spacious feel in the room, and it has an entry to the deck on the back of the house. Walls are a creamy ivory in the bedroom, and floors are carpeted in soft beige. Mrs. Buck chose bedroom furniture in a deep finish. The large room easily accommodates the king-sized sleigh bed, a tall armoire placed in a

corner along with a matching fivedrawer chest. The adjoining bath has plenty of space for two, a vanity runs the length of the room and is fitted with two sinks, and thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s room for a jetted tub and shower. Two deep walk-in closets are also located in the master bath. Mrs. Buck painted the master bath a refreshing shade of green and used the same shade along with touches of rose for accents. The room holds one of the Bucksâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; favorite family pieces, a table lamp made completely of glass in a Tiffany style that came from Buckâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s familyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s home in Tuscaloosa. The lamp is one of many items from Buckâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s family, who operated a boarding house on Broad Street in Tuscaloosa, starting in the 1920s and 30s.

A series of shelves hold a collection of family photographs, including one of Mrs. Buck’s mother as a newly named Miss Jefferson County in 1950. There, too, is a collection of ceramic angels her mother made through the years. Buck’s father and two aunts operated the boarding house together. The family business becomes apparent in the Buck’s dining room, too, located to the left of the entry and adjacent to the open kitchen. The dining room table is set with china from the boarding house. The Carleton rose pattern is a floral design featuring shades of rose and gold edging. A tiered brass chandelier hangs over the oval dining table, and a sideboard from Buck’s grandmother’s home is

used in the room, set with pewter serving pieces the Bucks have collected. There’s what appears to be a three-drawer chest used in the room, another piece from the Buck’s boarding house, which opens into a writing desk, complete with pigeon holes and drawers on top. The room holds family photographs from the early 20th century, and in one corner stands a special Santa made by Mrs. Buck’s sister, Kay Shipp of St. Louis. Shipp makes the Santa form herself, literally starting out with a “lump of clay,” Mrs. Buck said. The Santa is dressed in a luxurious brocade cape bordered in fur, fitted over his traditional red Santa ensemble. Dining room walls are ivory, as are others throughout the house, and an Oriental rug with hints of green and gold is

used in the room. There is entry to the kitchen from the dining room, where oak cabinets line both sides of the room, and countertops are light beige. After buying the house, the Bucks added a cream-colored tile backsplash dotted with decorative floral tiles along the countertops and put in a marbled tile floor in shades of beige and ivory. The kitchen opens into a broad breakfast room that’s across the back of the house, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlook a growth of tall trees at the back of the property. Plantation shutters are used on windows, with pleated borders overhead in green and white. A large work island is angled

A wrought-iron glass-topped table is designed with batches of grapes and vines, matching a tall tiered baker’s rack that holds serving pieces and other items. The breakfast area opens into the Bucks’ living room, which extends the width of the house. The living room is the center of the house, and a glassedin fireplace is located at one end and can be enjoyed from the kitchen as well as the living room. The tray ceiling gives the space an open feeling, and double glass-paned doors at the back of the room allow lots of natural light. Floors are covered with plush beige carpeting and a soft leather couch and love seat are centered around a large wood coffee table in a square design. The piano is from Buck’s grandmother’s home. Drapes for the room are a floral pattern with shades of rose set against a rich blue. In the foyer, which opens to the living room, is another piece from Buck’s family, a two drawer chest from his grandmother O’Hara’s home. A guest room and office are located in the hall across from the master bedroom. The office is Buck’s work area. Since retiring, he’s published two books for fellow educators, written as guides for organizational support for those in educational fields. The desk is large enough for holding two computer screens, L-shaped to allow unhindered desktop area as well. There are matching bookshelves above, done with subtle carvings along the edges. A high-backed leather swivel chair works well for the

Along the walls are memories of Buckâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s teaching and administrative days, awards and honors along with diplomas and recognitions. On top of a bookshelf is a birdhouse made to represent Buckâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s former school, Graham Elementary, made by friend Daphne Dickinson. Window treatments are in a striped pattern of navy, burgundy and gold. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I really enjoy this room,â&#x20AC;? Buck said. In the guest room is furniture from Buckâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s maternal grandmother, the bed, table and chest having intricate carvings of angels and decorative scrollwork. The furnishings have been painted white. Over a crocheted bedspread given to Mrs. Buck by a teaching friendâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mother when her own mother died, is a comforter displaying the Bucksâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; favorite dog breed, a Sheltie. On the bed, too, is a â&#x20AC;&#x153;Wedding Ringâ&#x20AC;? quilt made by Mrs. Buckâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s parents, dated June 17, 1987, the day the Bucks were married. Inside the chest in the guest room are pieces of Mrs. Buckâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s grandparents handiwork, hand sewn pillowcases trimmed with lace edgings. The room also holds a special painting, one of the Buckâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Shelties, Bonnie, done by Graham Elementary School custodian, Robert Givens.

Givens painted the portrait of Bonnie against a lakefront scene, perfect for the Buckâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s home. Mrs. Buck used a favorite family tablecloth to create window treatments for the room. She liked the design of the cloth, deep royal blue with a pattern featuring peacocks, and asked her friend Bertha Strickland of Corner, Ala., to see what she might make with it. Strickland made all the window treatments in the Bucksâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; house and came up with the way to convert the family tablecloth into a stunning window treatment. The hall bath holds more of Stricklandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s design work, a checkerboard fabric fitted with tabs and covered buttons to become a topper for the glass shower doors. The vanity has space for a tall shaded lamp, offering soft lighting in the room. The Bucks say they are every bit as happy in their house as when they first bought it. Theirs is a home Buck said he never fails to arrive at and have the feeling, â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is it.â&#x20AC;? Departing the Bucksâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; home brings a hearty farewell from the pair of Shelties, who rise for the occasion with their breedâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s famed herding instinct. With muted voices and wagging tails, the Shelties bid â&#x20AC;&#x153;adieuâ&#x20AC;? to guests. Buck smiles and explains, â&#x20AC;&#x153;They think theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re doing their job, you know.â&#x20AC;?

Local residents know that if you need a specific item, chances are you can find it at a store that has been serving the community for 30 years. And it’s not unusual to see cars and trucks with license plates from all over the region in the parking lot on any given day. “We have a little bit of everything,” said John Bullock, owner of The Pink Variety Store, located along Cogswell Avenue in Pell City. Bullock said the idea originated several decades ago, when his parents, John and Wanda Bullock, decided to start a business. “When my younger brother, Craig, and I were very young, my mom and dad would sell

Bullock said the knickknacks and figurines were very popular with customers, and his dad eventually added tools, hardware, and electrical supplies to the store’s inventory. “My parents worked very hard,” he said. “They would go to auctions and buy items to sell. They would make contact with vendors and other people

to buy things from.” Bullock said the store operated out of the small house throughout the 1980s. “In the late 80s, the store needed to be painted,” he said. “My dad would buy salvage paint from Sherwin-Williams, and he took the random colors and mixed them together and came up with the pink color.” Bullock said the name of the store never really changed until his parents expanded into the new store building in 1993. “They put the sign on the front of the store that said ‘The Pink Variety Store,’” he said. “To many local residents, the store is simply known as ‘The Pink Store.’” Over the years, the store has seen a series of expansions to accommodate its growing clientele. “We added a tool section, then Craig wanted to open a hunting and fishing section,” he said. Bullock said when Craig moved out to Riverside and opened Riverside Outdoors, the hunting and fishing section turned into a silk flower section. “We have all sorts of merchandise now,” he said. “We have tools, hardware,

knives, figurines, dolls, accessories, tractor supplies, hand soap, kitchen supplies, nails, electrical and plumbing supplies, signs, silk flowers, and much more.” Bullock said his wife, Diane, purchased the silk flowers portion of the store in the early 2000s, and he purchased the store from his parents in 2005. “It has always been a family business and is likely to remain a family business,” he said. Bullock said he has no current expansion plans. “Right now, we are a good size for the volume of business we are doing,” he said. Bullock said the store has a connection with the community. “This town has great people,” he said. “We have a lot of customers who have come here their whole lives. We saw them as children, and now they are grown and married. It is great to be a part of Pell City history and tradition.”

Planned revitalization Lincoln project to include water access

Plans are under way for the Lincoln Fishing Trail, which will allow more local residents to experience the joys of lakeside living. “This is something I’ve been working on for several years,” Lincoln Mayor Lew Watson said. Watson said the idea behind the Lincoln Fishing Trail is to offer an easily accessible place where anyone can go and fish. “We wanted to create a fishing area that is handicap-accessible and open to the public,” he said. The Lincoln Fishing Trail will tie in to the Lincoln Downtown Revitalization Project, cur-

rently under way in old downtown Lincoln. The city received a $150,000 transportation enhancement fund grant in 2007, and the project was awarded in August 2009. Construction began in November 2009. The project covers approximately one city block in old downtown Lincoln and includes sidewalk renovation, pedestrian street lights, shade trees islands in the parking areas, paving of streets and landscaping. “The Lincoln Fishing Trail will include a bridge that will go from the old downtown Lincoln area across Blue Eye Creek,” he said Watson said the steel and concrete bridge will be approximately 60 feet long and 10 feet wide and feature steel railing in a line and V-shapped pattern. “The bridge looks very attractive and will enhance the beauty of the old downtown

“We need to make the soil test bores to determine the bridge foundation,” he said. Watson said hopefully the soil test bores could be completed by the end of January. “Weather permitting, we also need to finish the final survey of the site,” he said. “The excessive rainfall we have had recently has prevented us from conducting the final survey.” Once the final survey is completed, he will be asking for assistance from the general public for help with the project. “We are trying to keep it a local project, with no federal or state funds involved,” he said. “We believe federal or state funding would greatly delay the project, and we want to see it happen now, rather than years from now.” He said it should take 30-60 days to complete the bridge once construction begins, with approximately the same timeframe for the fishing stations. “We are excited about this project and believe it will greatly benefit our local residents,” he said. “Hopefully we will see good weather soon, and get this project closer to completion.”

Realtors share their tips to maximize your

Now that winter is winding down, prospective homebuyers are likely to be returning to the lake to look for the perfect vacation house, retirement home or primary dwelling. For those looking to sell, now is the ideal time to clean up and make some minor changes to help your house sell. Cher Dulaney, a Realtor with St. Clair Home Town Properties, said she has a to-do list for prospective sellers. “The front door makes a vital first impression, so make sure it’s clean and painted. Putting planters and some flowering plants can add color and curb appeal, and you want to make sure you edge your sidewalks and driveway. That just improves the overall appearance.” Inside, the house should “not be cluttered, it should be clean, tidy and organized. Make sure any porches, garages and the grounds around the house are also well organized and uncluttered. Make sure all the lights work and all the dishes are put away, not in the sink or on the counter. Take care of any minor repairs, like replacing knobs on cabinets or leaking faucets to show that you’re keeping with routine maintenance.” Dulaney says the issue of how much of the seller’s personal belongings are left out should be handled on a case-by-case basis. “An agent can help you with that,” she said. “But the less of your stuff, the easier it is for the buyer to visualize his stuff.” Brenda Fields of Fields-Gossett Realty recommends “minimizing the clutter. Clean out the closets and get rid of things you don’t need. It makes the house look larger. Clean the carpets where needed and paint if needed. For curb appeal, cut back your shrubs and spruce the yard up. Make sure that any problems you know of are taken care of. It makes things a lot easier, if you can, to take care of them before a potential buyer even knows about it. The home inspection will turn up any unknown problems.” Lynne Stanford of ERA King Real Estate provided a document called “99 Ways to Sell Your Home.” Many of these tips overlap the ones given above, but many do not. Begin with painting the exterior (or at least sprucing up window frames, shutters and front doors, particularly with southern exposure), put in window boxes (red geraniums, ivy and white petunias are recommended), pressure wash the exterior, check the roof and gutters, clean the windows “until they shine,” replace worn siding, and reseal patched driveways. Other exterior tips include installing shutters and window panes (or the illusion thereof), lay a brick or stone walkway and “when it

Weed the area and make sure the lawn is watered regularly. For the entry, you might consider replacing the front door with a raised panel solid hardwood ($600) or a pine or fir door ($300 unpainted). A handcrafted wooden screen door is also recommended, as is a brass door knocker, doorknob and kick plate. Replacing a mail box is also an option. decorative element and highlight it,â&#x20AC;? eliminate odors, and create a distinct entranceway, so that people are not walking directly into the living area. Make sure there is a place for coats and umbrellas. Inside, higher wattage bulbs make the rooms look brighter and larger, and paint rooms in light, neutral colors, and decorate rooms in tones of one neutral color. Rent a mini-warehouse for clutter and unnecessary furniture, have a yard sale to get rid of still more clutter and place mirrors in strategic areas to make small spaces look larger. Clean off countertops and tabletops, and consider a skylight in small, dark spaces. Keep walls simple and elegant, and store half of your childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s toys in the attic, at least while the house is being shown. Take the leaf out of the dining room table and remove other furniture to ensure traffic flow. Have your kitchen professionally cleaned if you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have time to do it yourself, clear any work surfaces and add storage space if possible. Fix lifted corners on laminate countertops with a heat gun, clean out drawers and replace or refinish cabinet doors, change cabinet fixtures and make sure pets stay out of the kitchen. Polish up any enamel appliances and have other appliances refinished, add task lighting for work areas and bring light in. In the bathrooms, make sure to clean up ceramic tile and grout, replace cracked or loose tiles, re-caulk faulty joints, buy a new white shower curtain, and downplay dated tile arrangements with muted paint and towels, shine up chrome fixtures and remove stains from the sink. Replaced chipped sinks or bathtubs, fix leaky faucets, clear away clutter, install brass towel rails and faucets, secure wallpaper, put magazines and books into a basket, replace the toilet seat, light candles or potpourri and install a fan. In the living areas, establish a focal point (such as a fireplace), and group furniture accordingly, not sprawling. Rejuvenate floors (and silence squeaky ones), get rid of old pressed wood paneling, flat wrinkles in wall-to-wall carpet and add architectural detail with crown molding, chair rails and other flourishes. Put up any collectibles, especially those of a political or religious nature. For furniture that remains, consider new slipcovers or flip the cushions. Revive whole rooms with new window treatments, disguise a bad view with plants, half curtains or a valence. In the dining room, have the tabletop refinished or polished, dress up the table with a runner or placemats, use a center-

piece, hang a swag over bare windows, light the wicks of candles (for a lived in look), dust your chandelier and wash the bulbs. Splurge on new bed linens for the bedrooms, making the flooring soft, tone down kids rooms and put away toys and clean out closets. Back outside, trim all hedges and shrubs, plant new plants, mend fences, plant colorful annuals and beautify a plain wall or fence with a climbing plant. Morning glories are recommended for this. Have pictures of the garden in other seasons available and demonstrate how it can be used. Get rid of rusty swing sets, get a fact sheet about your pool and plant a mature tree. For basements and garages, store junk overhead or on shelves around the wall, remove oil stains from the garage floor, make the basement look spotless, clean the furnace and have the basement checked for radon and asbestos.
