What baseball team to people in Louisiana cheer for? I assume it's Houston?

Louisiana typically isnt a baseball state. When we do cheer, its usually for LSU baseball because they are the only team here with championship success.
Im not speaking for everyone of course because some hate LSU.

Innotech is correct. College baseball is pretty big here. LSU is usually at or near the top with six national championships since 1991 and currently holds that title. Then you have Tulane who has made two appearances in the CWS in 2001 and 2005, as well as UL making one in 2000 (with more to come, if I may editorialize a tad as an admittedly BIASED fan).

Listening to local sports radio, there doesn't seem to be a particular MLB team that commands widespread local loyalty, but we do have our fair share of rabid Astros fans.

Good to know Louisiana likes baseball, just surprised it's college baseball. When I stopped to think about it, I'm a little surprised that New Orleans doesn't have a team. Did they ever have a team way back in the day?

They (New Orleans) do have a long baseball history, but as a MLB market, it hasn't happened. They currently have a triple-A team in the New Orleans Zephyrs that draws pretty well and has seen success at that level, but it is thought that the market is too small to support a MLB team.

I found a link on the Zephyrs website chronicling the history of NO baseball if that's of any interest:

New Orleans Baseball History | New Orleans Zephyrs History

Personally, I'd love to see MLB expansion or re-location to NO, but it would need to be brilliantly managed and marketed to make it a success here. But, just consider that there are as many people in the Houston metro area alone than the entire state of Louisiana! Baseball just doesn't attract the same fan-base that football does down south, despite the success and support of college baseball, so market size is critical. And even when considering our football obsession, we felt extremely fortunate to keep the Saints in NO after Katrina - with special thanks to Paul Tagliabue...

Who knows, but perhaps some individual, or group can make it happen in NO. I, as a Lafayette resident, would likely buy season tickets.

Louisiana's not a baseball state. I went to opening night Zephyr's (New Orleans Tripl A team) game and half the seats were empty. There is some support for the Tulane and LSU teams. But in the deep South, football rules. Baton Rouge doesn't even have a minor league team (I think Shreveport does). It's too bad because I'm more of a baseball fan...

Shreveport once again has the Captains although in a different league and only single A. The last league which was the Texas league and 2A folded sometime in 90's I believe because of new ownership and the Newbies wanting a new staduim-the last one was built in the mid 80s for goodness sake. But I guess it satisfies the baseball fans around here. College ball is popular as has been stated before and Astros are number 1 with me, although some folks like the Braves, Cards (traditional fans from the South), Rangers, Giants, Cubs, Yankees, these are the most popular that I know of from circles of friends and acquantances.

SOME support for the LSU team ? Are you kidding ? They have one of the best College ballparks in the nation . LSU has led the nation in attendance for 14 straight years AND has put over 10,000 fans in the seats for a SINGLE GAME many times . In contrast , the average attendance for the New Orleans Zephyrs is a little over 5,200 .
" Some support " , yeah . Right .
