Product description

Leupold GX-4 Digital Rangefinder The Leupold GX-4 Digital Golf Rangefinder offers a rugged alumnium body, a vivid OLED dislpay and line-of-site measurement when the standard chrome faceplate is attached. Snap on the included Smart Key faceplate and the GX-4 instantly becomes a coach, providing accurate ranging information that matches your personal striking distances to the slope of the shot and current atmospheric conditions, even suggesting which club to use. Pinhunter and Prism Lock: Every GX golf rangefinder has been precisely calibrated to fire a laser beam exactly at the target in the crosshairs. Leupolds priprietary beam geometry improves laser returns from the pin and the advanced GX software accurately separates those returns from objects in the background. On courses that utilize prism technology, ranging a distant pin is even easier thanks to Prism Lock. Hold the top button to scan the area around the pin, your GX will beep and the display will freeze the moment it identifies a prism-topped flag stick. Optical System: Leupold engineers combine precision glass, cutting edge coating technology and rugged structural components to create some of the most desired optical products on the market. The optical system in the GX golf rangefinders is built to the same exacting standards. You can expect no less than bright, clear optics, accurate ranging, low glare, scratch resistance and years of dependable use. In addition to Leupolds advanced optical precision, the GX-4 sports a vivid red OLED display which is easy to read against any background and far superior to the standard LCD displays found in most golf rangefinders. Scan Mode: When you want multiple readings in one quick sweep, just hold down the power button on your GX-4 and the display will continuously update with accurate line-of-site measurements. As an extra benefit, on courses utilizing prism technology, you GX will beep and the display will freeze the moment you scan past a prism-topped flag stick,

Take your golf game to the next level with the Leupold GX-4 digital golf rangefinder, a high-end, two-faced rangefinder that measures the distance to the pin with precision accuracy. In its default configuration, the GX-4 is a straightforward laser rangefinder, with a rugged aluminum body, vivid OLED display, and meticulous line-of-sight measurement system. Snap on the included yellow Smart Key faceplate, however, and the GX-4 instantly becomes a coach, providing accurate ranging information that matches your personal striking distances to the slope of the shot and current atmospheric conditions. The GX-4 even suggests which clubs to use, helping you step onto the course with confidence. It's like having your own caddy on the fairway, but without the small talk.

PinHunter and Prism Lock
The GX-4's most elemental features are its PinHunter and Prism Lock functions. Every GX-4 golf rangefinder has been precisely calibrated to fire a laser beam at the target in the crosshairs, whether it's a flag, tree, or sand trap. The rangefinder then uses its proprietary beam geometry to gauge the returns from the pin, and its advanced GX software to accurately separate those returns from the objects in the background. There's no better way to determine exactly where a flag or water hazard is located. It's even easier to range a distance pin on courses that utilize prism technology thanks to the GX-4's Prism Lock. Simply hold the top button to scan the area around the pin. The moment the GX-4 identifies a prism-topped flagstick, the rangefinder will beep and the display will freeze. The PinHunter and Prism Lock features combine to make the GX-4 the most accurate golf rangefinder on the market.

The GX-4's PinHunter function lasers precisely on a pin or other target. Advanced Features
The GX-4 also includes a number of advanced features, accessible by switching the faceplate from chrome to yellow. The True Golf Range (TGR) feature, for example, uses sophisticated algorithmic-based software, temperature inputs, and altitude inputs to tell you exactly how far you should play a shot. If a golfer is hitting from the tee at a 30-degree slope above the green, the TGR will incorporate a golfer's hitting strength to calculate the best possible horizontal and vertical approach to the flag. Some golfers may be better served hitting a 6-iron, which will push the ball at a flatter trajectory and drop it down to the green sooner, while others would do better hitting a high 8-iron. The Club Selector takes the TGR function a step further by automatically recommending the appropriate club for each shot, and even indicating when the distance falls between clubs. Simply input the striking distance for three specific clubs and the GX-4 will do the rest. The TGR and Club Selector features offer a perfect way to get to know a course and improve your golf game. And if you're playing a competitive round with friends who demand an even playing field, simply snap the chrome faceplate back on and the GX-4 turns back into a traditional "no cheating" rangefinder.

The GX-4 also offers both Fog and Scan modes. Unlike most rangefinders--which give measurements from the first target returned, which in some cases is the fog between you and the pin--the GX-4 cuts through the weather to provide fast, accurate measurements to the green. You don't let anything stand between you and the cup, so why should your rangefinder? The Scan mode, meanwhile, delivers multiple readings in one quick sweep. Just hold down the Power button and the display will continuously update with accurate line-of-sight measurements.

Construction and Functionality
Leupold's products are legendary for their durability, with a ruggedly built housing and waterproof body. Fortunately for users, the optical system in the GX-4 is built to the same exacting standards, with precision glass, cutting-edge coating technology, and rugged structural components. The resulting optics are bright and clear, and offer accurate ranging, low glare, scratch resistance, and years of dependable use. On top of the optical precision, the GX-4 sports vivid red OLED displays, which are easy to read against any background and far superior to the standard LCD displays found in most golf rangefinders. Finally, the GX-4 offers an intuitive Quick Set Menu, giving you fast access to all the features of your rangefinder without cluttering the field of view. There's a reason the GX-4 is considered the top golf rangefinder on the market by critics.

I bought two different models for me and my wife. Mine is height compensation models. It doesn't aim well. It gives a wrong distance or very difficult to focus. The regular one is very good.

I presently own several rangefinders and I have owned others in the past so I feel my comparison is fair.
I own the Nikon LR1200 which works wonderfully for its generation. It is fast and accurate which I used to compare other rangefinders.
The Leupold GX-4 is in a higher class of functionality. Here's why I'm significantly impressed with the GX-4 above other golf rangefinders.
1. The GX-4 has a rubberized grip over an aluminum body. It is very strong while being compact. It appears to have the same structure, quality, and design as expensive cameras. The Leupold company has not produced a cheap device for market share. They are the Lexus of rangefinders.
2. The instruction booklet is very easy to comprehend and learn. I'm a computer instructor and I know what great technical documentation is and Leupold provides it. It explains the hows, whys, and when you would use certain functions and those functions are easily set with just two buttons.
3. The viewing screen is crisp and well-lighted by coated optical lenses. It has 6X magnification which is lower than the Nikon LR1200 with 7X but the difference is unnoticiable and unnecessary. In fact, my colleage says he can't use 7X because his hands shake too much.
4. In the GX-4, the OLED distance readout is bright enough to see in any outdoor setting with dark or extremely bright backgrounds.
5. The GX-4 has three reticles that you can choose for your preference although I always choose one and never switch again.
6. If you don't know already, the GX-4 has slope-adjusted distance readings which can be deactivated by removing the yellow smart key. When you reach a point in your golf career when the slope and distance are necessary for great scoring, the Leupold provides them with altitude and temperature corrections.
7. The GX-4 provides recommended club selections after you setup some typical distances for three of your irons. You only need to do this once or until the GX-4 enables your game to improve (there are default settings if you don't want to enter your own). I think this is a great function but probably not perfect. I entered my distances as described in the manual but on my first shot of 212 yards, the GX-4 told me to use a two iron. Well, I don't use a two iron or one iron so I had to make a mental conversion to my 5 and 7 woods. No big deal however.
8. You can tell the GX-4 is a fine device when you notice the battery compartment is built like a Leica camera. "Holy Cow Batman."
9. Finally, and most important, the GX-4 is accurate, dependable, and repeatable for reading flag sticks with or without the reflective prism. My colleagues who have "ordinary" rangefinders can only use them on flagsticks with prisms. It's fun to say, "Here, let me tell you the actual distance, would you like it corrected or uncorrected for slope?"
10. Considering all the GX-4 functions, quality, and design, you actually get much more VALUE for your money than other rangefinders. It even comes with a nice protective case that attaches to your belt or golf bag.

I've been using this Rangefinder for almost a year now and am very satisfied. It's built well, is very accurate and I really like the very clear viewfinder with easy to read red lettering. It's much easier to read than many other range finders I've used. I also like the form factor as it's much smaller than many rangefinders. As a walker, the less I have to carry the better and this one is small and fits perfectly in a pocket on my bag where I can reach it without taking the bag off my shoulder. Really good product and highly recommended.

This thing did not work. I could not pick up the flag from over 150 yards. I could not pick up a fat man on the green from over 150 yards. I bought this to replace my cheap noname Par something. When arriving at the course i immediately gave my old range finder to a friend. luckily I was riding with him so i could borrow it back whenever this piece of garbage decided not to work. It was the worst purchase i ever made. As soon as I was done with my round I returned it for a refund. My experience may have been isolated, but i would warn to fill out your warranty card. You may need it sooner than you think.

The Leupold GX4 is the best. I've owned 3 rangefinders and none compare to the GX4. It's fast, accurate, and it can cut through fog. It's easy to operate, operates in all conditions. I've even had it out in the rain and it has not affected the performance. I can get a reading to the flag when others in the group can't. I'm very satisfied with it and would recommend it to anyone. I use the angle to target feature and it helps with club selection on those hilly golf courses.

I originally bought a GPS (Golf Buddy) which works really well. I bought this after playing with a friend who had it. It is easy to use and gives you very accurate readings (especially with pinseeker). I thought the GPS would be the only way to get distances to fairway bunkers or the turn on doglegs, but I've had no problem getting distances with the rangefinder, as long as there is sand or a tree to get a reflection off of. I also like it on the range, where you can get the true distance to the range markers.

This is a great rangefinder! The first one I received did not pick up the prism on the flag. Talked with Leupold Technical Service and he said unit was malfunctioning possibly due to a circuitry problem. Sent back to where purchased and they sent a new one out. A definite difference in the original one and the new one. Very easy to use. Love being able to use the Smartkey to get slope, etc. but also the fact that I can take Smartkey off to use in a tournament. Would definitely recommend to friends.
