Recently Walgreens and Hewlett Packard (HP) agreed on so-called public print locations - using printer, and ink & toner from a third party. This means that
owners of a tablet or smartphone can now print straightaway from their mobile device to most Walgreens store sites, where their photos and other documents are printed out.
With the co-operation of Walgreens the printing network of HP has been extended to around 30,000 PPL's in total in The U.S. and abroad.
PPL stands for HP Public Print Locations.
To be able to print from on the go to one of the printing network sites, you need a mobile internet and email connection, and the HP ePrint Service iPhone app which is available for free. Using this app you can send your documents from your mobile device to the website of a local - Walgreens - store and then you can pick up the printouts approx. within an hour. The operating system of your device should be compatible with iOS 4.2 or later: iPad, iPhone (3GS or later), iPod touch (third generation or later).
What does this way of printing mean for printer ink suppliers such as 123inkjets. At this moment the influence on sales will be minimal, but in the long run when more and more people are going to use this remote printing service, it might become a serious issue for ink and toner suppliers. May be they will respond to this printing service with more promotions and actions in order to try to pursue their customers to use their own printer at home or office.
