S M S Kettle (kettles you text on your way home?)

ReadywhenUR – SMS Kettle

by Stephen
I think my dream gadget has just been invented. It’s laziness at its peak! This gadget is called ‘ReadywhenUR’, an ingenious title when I tell you what this thing can do. You send a SMS text to your kettle and it boils. Can you believe it! I’m definitely going to be getting one of these.

When you send the text, it is sent to the satellite and sent back to the kettle to be received by the built in radio receiver. I can see it now. You are watching telly and want a cup of tea during the adverts but can’t be bothered getting up, going into the kitchen and waiting on the kettle to boil before returning to the sofa only to miss the first two minutes of your favorite TV program. All you have to do is text your kettle (can’t believe I’m saying that) before the break, and all you will have to do is walk in the kitchen and serve your already boiled water.

If you are a gadget lover like me, you’ll go through about 100 texts a month anyway, so sending a text that will boil your kettle sounds like very little effort and what are a few texts when you’re spending hundreds a month on gadgets?

What a cool wedding gift, or house moving present! Great for when you have a friend over for a coffee and it certainly will impress the ladies. When you have been at work all day and just want to sit down to a nice mug of hot chocolate, text your kettle before you arrive and voila.

This amazing kettle can be yours for £100, which is more than your average kettle but will save you time and effort in the long run. No need for a husband or wife to make a cuppa for you, you just need your mobile and a ‘ReadywhenUR’.

Would this be any good for your guests??

17 Copy-Ands-Paste Blog Post Template

I’m usually a trooper when it comes to pain…but this wisdom tooth extraction has just not been treating me very well. Thanks for understanding that I still need a couple more days to recover before getting back on the saddle and writing blog posts again. Don’t worry, I’m not going anywhere!

Today, however, I’m happy (and very lucky) to feature a guest post from one of my favorite writers online, Kim Roach from Buzzblogger.com. She always produces fantastic material that’s quick to read. She’s already proven so with her first guest post that was published on SPI back in April of 2010.

If you write at all online, this is a post to bookmark for future reference – guaranteed.

Please give Kim a warm welcome, enjoy and share!

Do you ever get writer’s block?

I mean do you ever sit down at your computer with that blank screen mocking you in the face?

As a blogger, I’ve done this on more than one occasion.

Sure, I use all kinds of tricks to get the ‘ol inspiration motor running…

  • I keep a list of running article ideas.
  • I browse all of my favorite blogs scouting for possible ideas.
  • Tweet my followers for ideas.
  • If I get really desperate I’ll whip up a nice bubble bath and some wine :)

But sometimes you just need a good hook.

Something fresh and unique!

So today I’m going to give you 17 Copy-And-Paste Blog Post Templates that you can use as your own.

Happy Blogging!

1. Make a predictions post.

These are incredibly fun, especially towards the end of the year. Or the beginning of a new year :)

Take a look at what’s happening in your market. What’s hot? What are the current trends? And create a blog post around those with your predictions for the new year.

Not only are these types of posts a TON of fun but they also position you as a leader in your market.

So whip out the ‘ol Magic 8 Ball and publish your predictions!

2. Things You Might Not Know About Me

This is a blog post that I recommend EVERY blogger do.

One of the fastest ways to start truly engaging with your community is to give them a peek behind the curtain. Let them see who you are BEYOND just business.

The fact is that we are living through the humanization of business and people are extremely interested in the person BEHIND the business itself.

More than ever… we crave RELATIONSHIPS!

People don’t want cheesy marketing messages… they want YOU.

Your story… Your life… Your own unique personality infused into everything you do.

Your readers will be attracted to your weird quirks because they make you human.

When your flawed your real.

That’s one of the biggest pieces of advice I could give you this year.

Give people a peek behind the curtain.

Business is about HUMAN connection. And the only way to truly connect is by being completely you.

Your emails, your videos, your articles, every piece of content should be branded with your own, unique personality.

3. Why I Don’t Do ‘X’.

People LOVE controversy. That’s why the news channels thrive on ’bad’ news. Kind of concerning but knowing this can help you instantly increase your email open rates, improve your headlines, and get your articles read.

One of my favorite ways to do this is to use the headline:

Why I Don’t Do ‘X’.

I recently used this in an email entitled “Why I Don’t Do SEO”.

As you can imagine, it got QUITE the attention because I was debunking a hot topic within our industry.

You can use this same strategy on your own blog:

  • Why I Don’t Do Diets
  • Why I Don’t Do Online Dating
  • Why I Don’t Do Article Marketing

This one is an instant winner when used properly. Plus, it’s just a lot of fun!

People are looking for something fun, unique, and different.

By providing them with something valuable AND entertaining, you’ll be the one that gets read.

4. (Famous Person Guide) to (Blank)

Another great place to get article ideas is to tap into the media. Take what’s hot right now in the news and tie it into your market.

Here are a few examples:

  • The Steve Job’s Guide to Time Management
  • The Justin Bieber Guide to Dating
  • Harry Houdini’s ‘Secret’ to Unusual Marketing
  • The M.C. Hammer Guide to Social Media

Tap into the hot topics that are ALREADY inside the mind of your prospect.

5. Case Study

No one can resist a good case study. It’s like a good story.

People love to get a behind-the-scenes look at EXACTLY how someone has achieved a certain goal.

Some examples include…

If you want to quickly become the market leader in your industry, whip out a few case studies and let people follow along on your journey.

6. Product Showdowns.

Here’s a twist on the traditional product review post. Instead of just reviewing a product – we’re going to do a product showdown comparing 2 similar products and sharing the pros and cons of each.

Some examples might include…

  • Optimize Press Vs. Kajabi
  • Rapid Action Profits VS. JVZoo
  • Tweet Adder Vs. Tweet Attacks
  • Odesk Vs. Fiverr

You’re providing extra value by comparing similar (and possibly) competing products. Helping your reader to decide which one is best for them.

You can take this a step further by sharing how you personally are using the product. Anything you can do to get beyond the boring, overdone, traditional product review. The old ways of affiliate marketing are dying. But add your own unique twist and you’ll quickly start to see the difference.

7. ‘X’ Things You Must Do After (Blank)

Here’s a super simple one that’s almost always an instant winner. It’s fun and easy to write. Entertaining for your reader and it plays on our natural curiosity.

  • 7 Things You Must Do after Writing a Blog Post
  • 7 Things You Must Do After Every Workout
  • 3 Things You Must Do After Every Date

8. How To (Blank) in (X Number of Days / Hours)

Here’s another extremely powerful template that’s similar to the case study post above…

  • How to Generate 427+ Visitors in 24 Hours
  • How to Get 1,200 Facebook Likes in 3 Days
  • How to Lose 12 Pounds in 7 Days
  • How to Get the Perfect Date in 7 Days

Use either one of these templates to knock-out a killer blog post when your strapped for ideas.

9. Experimental Posts

The only thing better than living an exciting life is to live vicariously through someone else’s exciting life. You can bring this entertainment factor to your blog by doing experimental posts.

This is basically where you set an interesting goal for yourself and post updates on your progress over a 30-day period.

Here are a few examples to get your brain rolling…

10. Comprehensive Pillar Posts

This one never gets old. If you’re looking to establish your presence online, one of the best things you can do to stand out is to start creating some epic blog posts.

A ‘pillar’ article is generally longer than the traditional blog post (1,000+ words). This sort of ‘flagship content’ is a comprehensive article dripping in value.

Building a raving audience of fans online all starts with mind-blowing pillar content.

Content that makes people think. Inspires. Creates value. Provides a new perspective. Pushes people out of their comfort zones. Challenges your readers. And creates nothing short of a braingasm!

Because of this, people can’t help but share it with others via Twitter, Facebook, StumbleUpon, etc… So when done properly, your pillar posts should bring in a new burst of readers as well.

Here are a few examples of ‘pillar’ posts:

11. (Insert Desired Benefit) That No One Talks About

As humans, we naturally want to listen in on ‘insider information’.

Kind of like when you were little and you tried to listen in on your sister’s telephone conversations. We love listening in when we’re not supposed to :) That’s why this template works so well…

  • Traffic Strategies That No One Talks About
  • Weight Loss Secrets That No One Talks About
  • Dating Advice That No One Talks About

12. Blog Post Roundup

Here’s an easy one that you can whip up quickly when you’re running short on time. List the top 10 blog posts from the year. Or the top blog posts from around the web that week. Or simply do a ‘Best Of’ post for your industry. This could be the best Twitter posts, forum posts, best blog posts, best news items, best product releases, etc…

Whip up any combination of your choice. You could even do this on a weekly basis. People love these types of posts because it keeps them in the loop on what’s going on in the industry without having to do all the searching themselves.

Kikolani.com does a really good job of this in their ‘Fetching Friday’ posts…

13. Things I Wish I Had Done Differently

These types of posts are almost always a hit because people love to read about other people’s ‘mistakes’. Plus, they provide a ton of value for your readers and help them to avoid common pitfalls.

Give your readers a look behind-the-curtain. Be authentic and transparent and people will love you for it.

Some example headlines might include:

  • 10 Lessons I Learned in 2011
  • 7 Things I Wish I Knew When I Started
  • 12 Things I Would Do If I Were Starting From Scratch

14. The Tools of the Trade

Give people a behind-the-scenes look at the tools you use in your business. People love these types of posts. If you want to take it one step further, shoot a video of your office. You’ll create instant engagement with your readers.

Here are a few example headlines you could use…

  • The Top 12 Marketing Tools I Use in My Business
  • 7 Marketing Tools I Couldn’t Live Without
  • 18 Must-Have WordPress Plugins
  • (LIVE Video) A Look Inside My Office

15. Ask / Involve the Reader!!

Engagement is quickly becoming one of THE most important marketing metrics in business.

All of your content should be a reflection of the wants, needs, desires, and frustrations of your reader.

There are LOTS of different ways to do this. You can create an “Ask the Reader” type post where you ask an engaging question and start interacting in the comments. Or you can challenge your readers to achieve a specific goal that month and report back with their results.

Here are a few examples…

Challenge your readers:

16. Debunk Industry Myths.

Every industry has its fair share of myths, legends, and misconceptions.

People love nothing more than debunking common beliefs. Plus, by pointing what’s WRONG in your industry, you also position yourself as a leader.

Some examples here might include:

  • Top 7 Dieting Myths Debunked
  • Why I Hate the Atkins Diet
  • 7 Lies You’ve Been Told About Dating
  • Why Pickup Lines Don’t Work (and what to do instead…)

Talk about what’s WRONG in your industry. Nothing gets more attention than controversy. But you must do it right. Debunk with style :)

17. Comment On Industry Gossip

Every industry has it’s own circle of gossip. Writing about these hot topics is one of the best ways to increase readership and tap into the conversation that’s ALREADY taking place in the
mind of your prospect.

You can get your fill of juicy gossip browsing the major news sites, in related forums, related blogs, and in your inbox.

This sort of timely ‘news’ (i.e. gossip) makes for great content.

  • New fad diets
  • Famous people on such-and-such diet.
  • The Truth About Product X
  • Where is Mobile Marketing REALLY Headed?

Part of positioning yourself as an authority is staying ahead of the trends within your industry. If you can be the first to report on relevant trends that are impacting your industry, then people will literally ‘tune’ into your station to make sure they stay updated.

Take a stand on the issue and help guide your reader to make an informed decision.

Use the 17 blog post ideas above to stand out from the crowd, get your blog noticed, and become an industry maven.

Heres another great review for the Ivy Mount Guest House

This is what makes my job great!

A review has been posted by ‘Miss. Harriet Brewitt’ see below:

Review:
‘When my partner and I arrived at the Ivy Mount Guest House we were greeted with a smart looking property. We had walked just five minutes from the Eccles tram stop and found Ivy Mount very easily.
We had previously told Paul (the owner) that we would be arriving late in the evening so he provided us with a key safe and emailed me (very promptly) the combination. This was a brilliant idea, ideal for flexible arrivals.
We walked through the guest house which was very clean and smelt nice. Even though there was nobody there to greet us, it felt welcoming and cosy.
We found our room with ease and were immediately impressed with its size. There was an ironing board and iron, TV and DVD player, hair-drier and tea and coffee making facilities. A welcome booklet provided us with a free wifi code and local information etc. The room was warm and the beds were comfortable, great for relaxing after a hard day\’s shopping.
Our room had a very small en suite. This was in no way a problem for us and we appreciated that it made the best out of a small space.
Downstairs at breakfast we met Paul who was very warm and friendly. There were a good selection of foods to fill up on and the cooked breakfast was very tasty(with runny eggs)!
We stayed two nights at the Ivy Mount Guest House and will definitely be back when we are next in Manchester.’

Thank you very much ‘Miss. Harriet Brewitt’

Whitney Houston found dead, aged 48

Publicist confirms death of troubled soul singer, one of the world’s best-selling artists at her peak in the 80s and 90s

American soul singer and actress Whitney Houston, one of the most decorated female artists of all time, has died aged 48.

R.I.P  WHITNEY

Her publicist, Kristen Foster, confirmed her death in the early hours of this morning. While the cause of death remains unclear, police said she was found dead in her hotel room in Los Angeles.

Police spokesman Mark Rosen told reporters Houston was pronounced dead at 15:55pm (23:55 GMT) in her room on the fourth floor of the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

“She has been positively identified by friends and family (who) were with her at the hotel, and next of kin have already been notified,” he said.

The singer was in Beverly Hills for the Grammy Awards which take place on Sunday night. She died hours before she was expected to perform at record producer Clive Davis’s annual pre-Grammy party on Saturday, which is held at the Beverly Hilton.

Houston was one of the world’s best-selling artists at her peak in the 80s and 90s, selling more than 170 million albums. Among her hundreds of awards sat two Emmys and six Grammys as she moved effortlessly from musical hits such as I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me) and Saving All My Love For You to worldwide movie success with The Bodyguard – which included her signature hit I Will Always Love You – and Waiting to Exhale.

But her striking voice and image, along with her record sales, became ravaged in recent years by drink and drug abuse. Public appearances became more erratic and she confessed to using cocaine, marijuana and pills leaving her unable to hit the high notes she had done in her prime.

Despite her personal troubles she commanded great affection among her music industry colleagues, and emotional tributes were sent out in the hours after news broke of her death I am absolutely heartbroken at the news of Whitney’s passing,” legendary music producer Quincy Jones said in a statement. “… I always regretted not having had the opportunity to workwith her. She was a true original and a talent beyond compare. I will miss her terribly.”

Neil Portnow, president of the Recording Academy, which runs the Grammys, said event producers were working on ways to honour the singer in front of her many friends in the audience.

Standing on the red carpet outside the hotel, Portnow said they would “try to celebrate her life,” and called Houston a “one of a kind singer” whose body of work was “staggering.”

Whitney Houston, her debut album in 1985, sold millions. Saving All My Love for You brought her her first Grammy, for best female pop vocal. Further hits followed leaving the New York Times to write that Houston “possesses one of her generation’s most powerful gospel-trained voices”.

Houston seemed born for greatness. She was the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston, the cousin of 60s pop diva Dionne Warwick, and the goddaughter of Aretha Franklin. She started singing in church as a child and in her teens, she was a backing singer for Chaka Khan and Jermaine Jackson.

Following her death Franklin released a statement saying: “I just can’t talk about it now. It’s so stunning and unbelievable. I couldn’t believe what I was reading coming across the TV screen. My heart goes out to Cissy, her daughter Bobbi Kris, her family and Bobby (Brown).”

Houston married soul singer Bobby Brown in 1992, the year that The Bodyguard made her an acting star. But their rocky marriage, during which Brown was arrested several times on charges including domestic abuse, ended in divorce in 2007. Two spells in rehab followed before Houston appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2010 to declare herself clean.

Houston briefly reignited her album sales with the 2009 platinum-selling I Look To You, but a disappointing world tour followed.

Just booked on the Great Northern Run….

God i need to train….the run is on my birthday 20th may, My 40th,if anyone wants to sponcer me,Im running for Manchesters Childrens Hospital, all sponcers WELCOME!!!!

Heres a bit of history about the run..

and traditionThe Bupa Great Manchester Run is Britain’s premier 10k and was first staged in 2003. In the inaugural year, world class Ethiopians Berhane Adere and Derartu Tulu fought a magnificent battle at the head of the 10,000 strong field, Adere just winning ba sprint finish in 31min 50sec. Sonia O’Sullivan was 10 seconds behind. Paul Tergat ran a perfectly controlled race to take the men’s title in 28:48 in a tight battle with fellow Kenyans William Talel and Daniel Rono, who were two seconds and eight seconds behind respectively.

In 2004, O’Sullivan scored a major upset when outpacing Adere to win by three seconds in a time of 32:12 with Margaret Okayo of Kenya third in 32:23. Aussie Craig Mottram won the men’s race in 27:54 from runner-up Zersenay Tadesse with an out-of-sorts Tergat back in fourth.

The world’s greatest-ever distance runner, Haile Gebrselassie, put on a breathtaking show around the streets of Manchester in 2005 to post a UK all-comers’ record of 27:25. He was followed home by Juan Carlos de la Ossa, who lowered the Spanish national record to 27:55, and Ukraine’s Sergiy Lebid in 28:14. Lornah Kiplagat’s performance might have been overshadowed by the Great Ethiopian, but the Kenyan-born woman now representing the Netherlands, ran the fastest time in Britain of the year – 31:28 – to beat Jelena Prokopcuka of Latvia.

In 2006, by defeating their rivals Tadesse and Adere were rewarded with new Eritrean and Ethiopian records – Adere in 31:07 and Tadesse in a super fast 27:36. But Gebrselassie’s UK All-Comers’ 10km record didn’t survive in 2007 as Micah Kogo produced a stunning 27:07 run, while Britain’s Jo Pavey, the 33-year-old Commonwealth 5,000m silver medallist, roared to a personal best time of 31:47 to narrowly win the women’s event.

Pavey defended her title in 2008, pulling away from Kenya’s Rose Cheruiyot in the closing stages to win by 10seconds in a time of 31:58 with Bezunesh Bekele from Ethiopia third.

Gebrselassie’s hopes of regaining his world 10km road running record in 2009 were thwarted by strong winds but he still proved too powerful for the rest of the field as he stormed home in 27:39 ahead of Ali Zaied of Libya and Lebid. Cheruiyot, who had her eyes on Paula Radcliffe’s UK all-comers’ mark of 30:38, also saw her opportunity wrecked by the elements but still produced a respectable time of 32:01. Brian Alldis, coached by Paralympic legend Tanni Grey-Thompson, claimed an easy win in the wheelchair race in 23:20, well clear of Tushar Patel, who clocked 25min 26sec and Daniel Lucker (26min 10sec). Paralympic 1500m silver medallist Shelly Woods, who was third in the recent Flora London Marathon, won the women’s title unchallenged in 25:27 from Sarah Piercy.

Gebrselassie stormed to his third Bupa Great Manchester Run success in 2010 but again was thwarted by a strong wind, which this time restricted him to a time of 28:02. Seven seconds back in second place was Spain’s Ayad Lamdassem with Lebid third in 28:29. Gebrselassie’s fellow Ethiopian Worknesh Kidane, in her first international 10k, won in a fast and personal best time of 31min 19sec over the flat and fast course. She had broken away just after halfway and easily won ahead of Jessica Augusto and Ines Monteiro (both of Portugal), though they gained personal best times of 31:47 and 32:02 respectively. David Weir and Shelly Woods won the men’s and women’s wheelchair events for the second year running in 2010.

The brilliant Ethiopian was back again for the 2011 race and made it three in a row with another stunning display, though he was given something to think about by rising British runner Chris Thompson, fresh from a recent PB. The Briton went stride-for-stride with the world’s greatest-ever distance runner until Gebrselassie made a telling break with around 2km to go to win in 28:10 in the testing windy and damp conditions. Thompson was 11 seconds further back with Ukraine’s Sergiy Lebid third in 28:25.

But there was a thoroughly deserved British success in the 2011 women’s race with Helen Clitheroe becoming the first home winner of the event for three years in a time of 31:45 following a superb gun-to-tape display. Christelle Daunay of France produced a fast finish to take second spot 13 seconds back with the highly-fancied Grace Momanyi (Kenya) third in 32:04 and former champion Berhane Adere having to settle for sixth.

(Hopefully  i will be on here next year??? ha ha …..)

Jamie Oliver comes to Manchester!

Jamie Oliver

5,000 diners a week? Jamie Oliver thinks big as he prepares to open restaurant on Manchester’s King Street

Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver is finally ready to open his first Manchester restaurant – almost three years since he mooted his ambitions to spread his foodie empire to the city.

The site for his Jamie’s Italian, at the top of King Street, is rapidly taking shape and Jamie is now recruiting for the head chef and management at the site ready for a huge launch.

Jamie clearly feels there’s a big appetite for his Italian style in Manchester – as the King Street eaterie will be his biggest restaurant to date.

And Jamie doesn’t appear to be worried that he’ll be in direct competition with Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand’s Italian restaurant, Rosso, which is just across the road.

I hear the refurbishment of the former HSBC bank building is looking pretty stunning ahead of Jamie shipping in his team into the venue in the autumn.

He’s clearly hoping for a high volume footfall at the restaurant, as in the advert for staff, applicants are advised: “You won’t be fazed by serving 5000 customers a week.”

Essex-born Jamie has created a multi-million pound food empire over the last decade, and is one of the best known faces in cuisine across the world thanks to his TV shows like The Naked Chef, Jamie’s Kitchen, and his campaigning work on school dinners.

As well as running his chain of Fifteen gourmet restaurants across the world, in 2007 he started up his Jamie’s Italian restaurant brand, promising authentic but affordable Italian grub.

Restaurateurs clearly feel there’s an unquenchable thirst for classy Italians in Manchester, not least thanks to the success of celebhaunt San Carlo – believed to be the city’s most profitable restaurant.

Indeed, The Diary also hears there are plans to convert the modern English cuisine of the Kitchen Restaurant in Barton Arcade into the Italian tapas format so popular over at San Carlo spin-off Cicchetti.

The Kitchen, owned by The Circle club, hopes to emulate the success of venues like Cicchetti and Dimitris in providing “modern Italian and Meditteranean tapas” in a phased redevelopment in coming months
