King’s Volunteer Takes Her Turn as Facilitator

This past month one of our BaSE Volunteers (Yvonne) joined King’s specialists on a trip to Maun and Gumare to help facilitate leadership training sessions for potential King’s volunteers. Yvonne was one of the first individuals to receive a BaSE Pack and has been running programs with it at Dukwi Camp. Sometimes the best way to learn is to be thrown in the deep end and forced to lead. Yvonne’s ability to utilize the BaSE Pack, creatively engage large numbers of children and inspire other leaders increased drastically. It was also Yvonne’s first time working with children with disabilities so it was a meaningful trip all around.

Since the trip we have heard reports from our Peace Corps friend in Nata that Yvonne’s weekly programs are much different…full of energy, creativity, variety of activities and passion! We will continue to find creative ways to support our volunteers – clearly, travelling with individuals to different locations to help facilitate training sessions is effective.

Say hello to our newest member of King’s Volunteer. Gorata Pharithi has been involved with our programmes in the past so we were excited to re-connect with her in her new home. We expect to hear great transformation stories from Nata!

People Living With Disabilities Are Not Socially Accepted…

Gumare, Botswana is located in the North West District of Botswana, near the Okavango Delta. Our contacts quickly pointed out that their community receives little support because it is in a remote place where transport is not easily available. On our recent trip to Gumare we did face a few logistical challenges but we’re glad we made the effort. We were able to conduct a one day training with community leaders on how to use sports (specifically the BaSE Pack) to engage children and then we left a pack with a dedicated individual named Gosemang.

Gosemang works with children living with disabilities and he highlighted the fact that in Gumare there is much stigma against disabled people. “People Living With Disabilities are not socially accepted by society so we feel honoured and encouraged that you (The King’s Foundation) have taken the time to visit and equip us with the skills necessary to utilize the equipment you’re leaving with us.”

Gosemang told us that he wants to move around in schools teaching health, empowerment and issues of discrimination to the pupils. He believes the pack will act as a good platform to bring people of different abilities together and increase the self-esteem of those he works with. We expect to hear great things from Gumare and pray that the committed individuals who work in that community won’t feel like they are labouring in vain.
