Now that's not something you see every day! In fact it's a really big deal. Takohe birds were considered extinct for 100 years and are now being returned to the wild in New Zealand's South Island. This railway sleeper edged monument celebrates this massive conservation victory.

It's surprising how fast freshly cut oak railway sleepers change from golden yellow to bleached silvery grey. It's one of those unavoidable facts of life that outside timber (AND HAIR!) eventually goes grey, unless you chose to colour it with wood stain. Unsure if hairdressers would approve, though. I knew there was a reason why I lost my hair!!
