Feminine touch... Take inspiration from the Chelsea Flower Show by introducing florals to your home

That time of year has arrived when the world’s most famous flower celebration, the Chelsea Flower Show, is to open in London for four days of cutting-edge designs, inspiring planting ideas and all things floral.

There are theme show gardens featuring everything from vertical living walls to Japanese water features and the landscape of Monaco with a Mediterranean colour scheme. But even if you don’t have a ticket to the big event, you can still bring flowers into your home.

They can be dramatic and oversized, chintzy and classic, or take a vintage nostalgic twist. But at this time of year, you can’t go wrong with florals.

Furniture designer Laura Oakes believes flowers add a feminine touch to a home. ‘If you’ve got white walls and plain interiors, florals are an easy way to add something feminine without it being overwhelming,’ says Laura, who opened her studio in Rye, East Sussex, last summer.

One way of making a statement is by using floral accessories, such as the Anemone Cocoa rug by Marni for The Rug Company. Cleverly styled, the flowers pick up on a cushion and the pictures on the wall.

Other accessories, such as the Kew Garden rose bone china cup from Sainsbury’s or the botanic garden jug by Portmeirion, are gorgeous for serving afternoon tea.

Finally, why not get into the spirit of this year’s show by picking up a set of placemats reminiscent of the 1938 Chelsea Flower Show.

The Chelsea Flower Show runs from May 24-28, rhs.org.uk.
