In Africa, we provide free medical care
Every year, more than 2,000 surgeries and 8,000 dental treatments are performed
free of charge for people living in poverty in Africa.
This medical care is made possible by the donations we receive and the commitment of 1,550 volunteers
who have been joining us on humanitarian aid missions every year for over 40 years!
To carry out these missions, we use a fleet of civilian hospital ships: the Africa Mercy and the Global Mercy.

Mercy Ships Welcomes Anjara, First Cleft Lip Patient in Madagascar
On May 28th 2024, Anjara became the first patient to receive free life-changing cleft lip surgery from Mercy Ships in Madagascar.

When a facial tumour began growing from, he feared that it would dash his prospects as a professional mechanic. He then met Mercy Ships.
Aissatou: A father’s love
Since Aissatou was born with a cleft lip four years earlier, her father Ousmane had been in pursuit of her healing.

Malang had been to multiple hospitals in Senegal in search of medical help. His legs started to bow and was hoping for an othopaedic surgery.

When a facial tumor first began growing, it was just a minor concern. Emmanuel felt flickers of worry, hoping it would fade away with time.
Learning to Eat: Cheikh’s Story
Ndeye’s only son Cheikh was born with both a cleft lip and a cleft palate. Because of these conditions, Cheikh struggled to breastfeed.
We’ve seen firsthand the challenges that arise when people don't have access to safe and timely healthcare. It weakens communities and leaves individuals vulnerable.

Samedi dernier, Mercy Ships Canada a tenu un évènement au #Robindesbois à l`occasion de la présence du conseil d`administration à Montréal pour l`assemblée générale annuelle. Cette rencontre a permis d`entendre les témoignages de plusieurs bénévoles présents. Dr Sherif Emil, Dr Louise Caouette-Laberge, Dr Jean-Martin Laberge et Céline Léger, infirmière pediatrique ont tous pu partager leur joie de s`impliquer pour apporter des soins cruciaux à nos patients. Ce fut aussi l`occasion de rencontrer l`équipe du #SIDIIEF, Secrétariat international des infirmières et infirmiers de l`espace francophone, collaborateur précieux engagé envers le développement des compétences infirmières afin de développer un meilleur accès aux soins de santé. Merci à Brian Hatter de chez #TrueNorthMarine de sa présence à titre de partenaire corporatif. Last Saturday, Mercy Ships Canada held an event at #Robindesbois to mark the presence of the Board of Directors in Montreal for the Annual General Meeting. The event featured testimonials from several of the volunteers in attendance. Dr. Sherif Emil, Dr. Louise Caouette-Laberge, Dr. Jean-Martin Laberge and Célnie Léger, pediatric nurse, all shared their joy at being involved in providing crucial care to our patients. It was also an opportunity to meet the team from #SIDIIEF, Secrétariat International des Infirmières et Infirmiers de l`Espace Francophone, a valuable collaborator committed to developing nursing skills to improve access to healthcare. Thanks to Brian Hatter of True North Marine, corporate partner, for caring deeply about our mission. Mercy Ships Canada also thanks Musique Alto for the loan of sound equipment and our volunteer photographer, Guillaume Tremblay.
C`est officiel! L`#AfricaMercy a terminé l`opération du premier patient de cette mission à Madagascar : Anjara, 10 mois, qui est née avec un bec-de-lièvre.
Pour sa famille, cette chirurgie ne transformera pas seulement l`avenir d`Anjara, elle rétablira également la joie dans leur foyer et leur communauté. 🙌

Meet the first patient of Madagascar field service, 10-month-old Anjara! After 10 years of waiting, her mother, Lalaina finally conceived but her baby was born with a bilateral cleft lip. Anjara’s family, unable to fully embrace the joy of her birth had been waiting for Mercy Ship’s return to Madagascar. 🙌
“I thank God that Mercy Ships is here, so they can help fix my baby’s cleft lip,” Lalaina said in gratitude.
Since Anjara’s birth her mother has bore the guilt of desiring a second child and the blame for her daughter’s cleft lip. But at last, with Anjara in one of Africa Mercy’s operating rooms, a mother’s happiness will be restored. Thanks to friends like you, hope is in sight for Anjara and her family.

Rencontrez Anjara, 10 mois, première patiente de Madagascar! Après 10 ans d`attente, sa mère, Lalaina, est finalement tombée enceinte, mais sa fille est née avec une fente labiale. La famille d`Anjara, incapable de profiter pleinement de la joie de sa naissance, attendait le retour de Mercy Ships à Madagascar. 🙌
« Je remercie Dieu que Mercy Ships soit ici, pour qu`ils puissent réparer la fente labiale de mon bébé », a déclaré Lalaina.
Depuis sa naissance, sa mère porte la culpabilité de désirer un deuxième enfant et la responsabilité de la fente labiale de sa fille. Mais enfin, avec Anjara dans l`une des salles d`opération de l`Africa Mercy, le bonheur d`une mère sera bientôt rétabli. Grâce à des partenaires comme vous, l`espoir est en vue pour Anjara et sa famille.

When Jean Jacques Diouf climbed the gangway of the Africa Mercy® for the first time in his home country of Senegal, he’d packed his suitcase with enough supplies for just one week. He figured he wasn`t going to be on the ship long. 🗓️
However, after spending a week among the international community on the hospital ship, including Canadians, 30-year-old Jean Jacques had formulated a new plan. He would return home to pack the rest of his belongings and return to the ship – this time, to stay. 🌟

Quand Jean Jacques Diouf est monté sur la passerelle de l`Africa Mercy pour la première fois dans son pays d`origine, le Sénégal, il avait préparé sa valise avec suffisamment de provisions pour seulement une semaine. Il se doutait qu`il ne resterait pas longtemps sur le bateau. 🗓️

Each Mercy Ships hospital is a melting pot of different cultures, languages, and shared hope – and sometimes, this bubbles up in fun new ways! During veranda time on the #GlobalMercy, our patients recently created and executed a fashion show, complete with their own handmade dresses and crowns.
It might not be your typical idea of glitz and glamor, but for our patients and everyone in attendance, it was a beautiful celebration of hope restored. After all, what better way to TGIF than sharing a moment of laughter with friends?

Chaque hôpital de Mercy Ships est un mélange de cultures, de langues (dont le français 😀) et d`espoirs partagés. Et parfois, cela se manifeste de manière amusante! Sur le #GlobalMercy, nos patients ont récemment organisé un défilé de mode, avec leurs propres robes et couronnes faites à la main.
Ce n`est habituellement pas l`idée qu`on se fait des paillettes et du glamour, mais pour nos patients et toutes les personnes présentes, c`était une belle façon de célébrer l`espoir retrouvé.
