Sat 8 June ~ John Bradburne Pilgrimage Climb 2024

The John Bradburne Pilgrimage Climb up Cross Fell will take place on Saturday 8 June 2024.

This is the highest mountain in England outside the Lake District. John Bradburne climbed and wrote about it many times in his poetry. The summit is just 5 miles from Skirwith where John was born and spent his early years. We start at Kirkland church, walk to Wythwaite then up Grumply Hill toWildboar Scar and on to the summit where we stop for lunch and prayers.

11 miles and 2400 feet of ascent which will take approximately 6 hours. You will need to be fairly fit and dressed for a boggy walk with possibly a cold wind, even in June. Before the walk, there will be a Mass held at St John the Evangelist Church, Skirwith, CA10 1RQ at 10am. All welcome to join the Mass. There will be refreshments, talks and an exhibition on John Bradburne and the Mutemwa Leprosy Care Centre in the Skirwith Village Hall after the walk.

To book your place and make your donation please visit: www.johnbradburne.com or call Kate on 07979187498.

This week's news from St. Catherine’s Catholic Primary School

On Wednesday Reception and Key Stage 1 had their May procession. We normally start in school and go into the church garden; unfortunately, the weather was not kind to us so we had to change plans. We took our flowers into church and laid them on the Lady Altar. It was lovely to be joined by so many families.

We have our half term break this Friday and we hope the weather will be a little kinder for us.

CAFOD are launching an emergency appeal for the people of Sudan. At least 25 million people need immediate emergency help, the situation has gone from serious to desperate very quickly. 'This crisis threatens to become the worst in living memory.' The UN is calling it 'the world's worst displacement crisis'. When violence broke out last year between government and paramilitaries, most aid agencies evacuated. Now, humanitarian workers are struggling to get back into Sudan to help. Many borders are shut. But the Church and CAFOD's local partners are still there and already responding.

More inforamtion is available on CAFOD’s website. Donate directly to the Appeal here.

Blessing of new chalices & paten for St Catherine's

During the morning Mass on Wednesday 15 May, Fr. John blessed two new chalices and a paten to be used at St. Catherine’s Church. Class 4 were present from St. Catherine’s School along with parishioners.

The chalice of salvation I will raise,
and I will offer a sacrifice of praise, alleluia.

The prayer of blessing from The Roman Missal reads:

With joy, Lord God,
we place on your altar these chalices and paten
for the celebration of the sacrifice of the new covenant:
may the Body and Blood of your Son,
offered and received by means of these vessels,
make them holy.
Grant, we pray, O Lord,
that, celebrating the unblemished sacrifice,
we may be renewed by your Sacraments on earth
and endowed with your Spirit,
until with the Saints we come to delight in your banquet
in the Kingdom of Heaven.
Glory and honour to you for ever.
Blessed be God for ever.

First Holy Communion celebration at St Catherine's

We offer our prayers and congratulations to the 15 children who received Our Lord for the first time in Holy Communion on Saturday 11 May. May they all continue to grow in their love for the Holy Eucharist – The Living Bread of Christ.

We are very grateful to Deacon David, Miss Davies and School, Sharon and Rebecca for preparing the children. Special thanks to the Flower Team for the lovely arrangements and to St. Catherine’s School for hosting the First Holy Communion breakfast. Fr. John
