Hartlepool micro-pub bucks trend
Peter Morgan, Landlord
Landlord, Peter Morgan, is confident of success.

There's nothing quite like a proper English pub, but they could be becoming a bit of an endangered species.

It's estimated that 52 pubs close every week in the UK, and many landlords say they've never had it harder.

But try explaining that to Peter Morgan, who armed with his redundancy and a burning passion for real ale, has opened what is thought to be the North East's first micro-pub.

Let us introduce, The Rat Race Ale House in Hartlepool...

Pint sized pub

The Rat Race Ale House has been created in a converted office at Hartlepool railway station.

The pub measures six metres in length and is just four-and-a-half metres wide.

Peter explains how he came up with the idea: "I was being made redundant, and two weeks before I finished at work I was down at the CAMRA AGM.

"They had a guest speaker who runs a micro-pub in Kent, and he was saying you only really need beer and a toilet to have a pub, and I just thought that's a good idea, I'm going to do that, and here we are!"

Peter has spent around £10,000 creating the pint-sized pub, which will only sell real ale and cider, along with soft drinks and wine:

"I hope I'm going to make money, but I also hope people in Hartlepool will come and have a great pint of beer because that's what the Rat Race Ale House is all about."
