I bought this to replace a 300W halogen lamp that doubled as a space heater. I loved the warm light the halogen gave off but with the energy consumption level and the heat I decided I'd look for a fluorescent alternative. I'm quite satisfied with this. As others have noted, the "dimmer" option is limited but what others don't note is that this is a fluorescent bulb and dimming is limited by the nature of how one works. Anyway, I posted two pictures[...] using a constant exposure to attempt to show the difference between 'fully dimmed' and 'full brightness'. This will hopefully give people an idea about what to expect. Someone else noted that if you were to rate on a scale of 0-10, 10 being brightest, the dimmest level would be a 3 or 4. Regardless, I am quite satisfied with the amount of dimming and expect to use it in dimmed mode most of the time. It uses about 15W when on the lowest setting and the full 55W (the bulb's rating) on the brightest setting. Compared this with my halogen where the dimmest setting consumed about 50W, the fluorescent bulb is already an bonus because the CFL is brighter at this lowest setting than the halogen was.Another thing to note is the "craftsmanship" of the item which surprised/impressed me. The painted metal has a nice smooth finish that is pleasing and the screw threads that hold the poles together are solid and don't leave the lamp teetering back and forth. I expect this to make a very good replacement to my previous workhorse the halogen lamp. Also, I feel I should note that for people wondering if this bulb is the type of fluorescent light that gives off a very harsh white color, this is not the case. The light directly from the bulb is surprisingly warm-feeling for a CFL (for what it's worth, the bulb is 3000K color rated). (it isn't a warm light like that of an incandescent bulb or a halogen bulb but it's not cold and harsh like many fluorescent bulbs which blind you like a 7-11 at 3am) Also, on the lowest setting a lot of the light is projected through the opaque glass at the top of the lamp and this helps make the light a bit less harsh as well (aka diffused).Lastly, the bulb comes on very quickly with very little flickering. This may change as the bulb ages (as to be expected) but for now it is a very quick turning-on and warming-up bulb (where it reaches max brightness within 10 seconds of being turned on).

I have owned many floor lamps and this one can't be beat, especially for the price. I want to address two common complaints people have about this lamp that are not true if you have any dexterity and know how to read directions. But first I just want to say that it is solid and balanced, uses a low profile 55W 2D florescent light (included) instead of energy sucking and heat generating halogen or incandescent bulbs, the bulb does not stick out above the diffuser, and it puts off just as much light as my 300W halogen lamp (~250W equivalent). The directions say to allow 25 minutes to assemble, but in my case it was about 10 minutes including reading the directions.

1. "Threads messed up/manufacturing defect/too hard to connect" - they state no less than two times in the short directions that if you meet any resistance when assembling the poles, stop, they are not lined up properly. All this step takes is a little patience and to wiggle the top piece you are assembling a bit while you are slowly turning it, and it screws in beautifully. If you meet any resistance simply back off and try again. The end result is a nice solid connection. The threads are very thin (a large number over a short distance) which leads to a tight fit and no wiggle once assembled, so with a little care you will not strip the threads.

2. "The lamp just sits on top of the pole unconnected/accident waiting to happen" - this is not true, if you look closely (and read the directions), you will see that the cradle the lamp sits in and the connection from the diffuser are both threaded, meaning they screw in to each other. What may be throwing people off is that it is initially connected by a sleeved wire that gets in the way of connecting the two threads. It has to be this way when it ships because the two pieces are in different locations in the box. This is easily resolved by simply carefully pulling the sleeved wire downwards through the cradle as you bring the two pieces close together, then it threads tightly.

All in all, I am very happy with this lamp, would recommend it to anyone, and will be buying more.

Short version: Nice looking, basic lamp, easy to assemble, and works great.

These lamps were more in vogue many years ago. I was not able to find a local seller so took a chance and purchased it sight semi-unseen from Amazon. The pictures don't quite describe the item - I have problems picking decor items via a photo. I needed a Basic lamp, and this one has a nice glass diffuser section with a semi-gloss black finish.

I have an old one without the glass diffuser (we had two, my ex took the glass one). I find the glass sided model to be much nicer for lighting up a large space, whereas the solid metal kind is better for adding indirect light by bouncing off the ceiling. I tried both lamps in each room. The solid metal one is now in the TV room to keep glare off the TV, and this new glass sided one is in the larger living room. The solid metal one couldn't project enough direct light in the large room.

The color of the light is nice, the dimming feature wonderful, and it delivers plenty of light for my largest room. It turns on quickly and is silent (no hum when dimmed for instance). This is a simple lamp. It has a solid black semi-gloss finish. My old one has a more matte/brushed metal finish with gold bands and pearl glass accents - a nicer looking design IMHO. This lamp is sturdy, and frankly provides everything I was looking for.

4 stars just because it is basic, and not quite as fashionable as I wanted. But it works great, looks nice, and was simple to assemble with easy to follow instructions. You can't go wrong.

I don't know if the product has changed or I was just lucky, but I had none of the problems that others have observed.

The sections were easy to assemble and I had no problems getting the parts to screw together (perhaps this was because I tend to screw things backwards until I feel the drop for the engagement point and then screw them down correctly.

The top *is* screwed to the remaining components, it does not just sit atop the pole as others have observed.

I put it together in my family room and then carried it into my office without problems (I did use one hand on the base and one hand about 3/4 of the way up the pole and only bent it an the angle necessary to walk through the doors). The lamp clearly didn't notice the move and all is working correctly.

One thing that you should be careful about when you are assembling the lamp, the top portion has the wires connected and so when you screw the pieces together, you can cause twists in the internal cord. Before I screwed those parts together, I turned them backwards several revolutions so that I put a backwards twist into the cord -- this was undone when I screwed the parts together without leaving twists in the internal cord.

The lamp is nice and bright and the dimmer switch does let the lamp dim somewhat (though it still isn't what I'd really call "dim").

For those with kids running about, this lamp is tall and while the base is weighed it is not designed for kids to run into it or otherwise grab onto it. If they do, it will fall and the translucent glass at the top is heavy. This is not a design problem in the lamp -- any tall floor lamps will have this same problem -- unless they have a 4 or 5 foot wide base. So if you have young kids running around, be sure to put this lamp into a corner and you might want to tether it to the wall to keep it from being knocked over (just like you should be doing with your TV's).

Anyway, I'm very happy with the purchase. It was a great value and works fine. The only real question is how long the bulb/ballast last. That I won't know for a few years (hopefully!).
