Queen Camilla is visiting Rye tomorrow to celebrate local literature. One of the major engagements is a visit to Lamb House (on West Street, in Rye) which we highly recommend visiting, especially if you have fond memories of reading Henry James or E.F. Benson.
Both writers lived at Lamb House and it was the setting for Benson’s fictional house, Mallards, in his book ‘Mapp and Lucia’, which some may remember from the TV adaptations.
Lamb House can also lay claim to a previous visit from royalty, this time overnight, when George I stayed at the house after a storm drove his ship ashore at Camber in 1726.
Apart from its historical and literary connections, Lamb House also boasts a beautiful walled garden - one of the largest gardens in the old town of Rye - full of flowers and continuous colour throughout the year.
Open Friday to Tuesday, we do hope you get a chance to see the place.
