Search engines are leading people who are trying to get “Surfer Girl Hair” to my article essentially detailing how to avoid it (“Secret Hair Tips for the Surfer Girl”), so I decided to publish our own recipe for the look. Surfer girls whose hair turns dry and brittle from the daily effects of salt and sun may not understand those who want to purposefully put their hair through such abuse. And similarly, like the new tanning salon that opened up in our little Hawai’i town, I’d find it absurd for anyone who has sun and ocean access to try to capitalize on one piece of the puzzle, going for “the look” instead of the experience and the multitude of benefits one gets from surfing, swimming, etc. Still we have much sympathy for wahines who can’t get the look the natural way – because of location, finances, physical issues, etc. – and we’d like to help everyone get it while avoiding harsh bleaches and dangerous chemical hair products.
Naturally, my hair is so dark brown it’s almost black, but as a surfer it lightens up with highlights that go all the way to blonde. As opposed to what happens when using lemon juice, the natural surfer grrl coloring seems to skip the brassy orange phase. It’s the combination of the salt and sun that creates the look. Ocean water is on average 3.5% salt – though salinity is effected by evaporation, precipitation, and ground water or river water. The more salty and sunny the surf spot, the quicker hair lightens up. On the East sides of the Hawai’i islands, with its abundance of river mouth breaks and more rain and clouds to block the sun, the condition of my hair doesn’t get quite so affected. On the West side though, with less fresh water and more desert-style environment, I can get “Surfer Girl Hair” in just a few sessions.
To recreate the surfer girl look, here’s a quick easy recipe:
Ingredients (approximate):
* Sea Salt – 2 heaping tablespoons
* Water – 2 cups
* Oil (olive) – 1 teaspoon
Shampoo your hair (we recommend using a shampoo bar like Kealia Organics and do not use conditioner), then let it dry completely. Heat water on the stove; pour in the salt and stir. Turn off heat, let cool to warm. Slowly pour solution over hair (if you have long or thicker hair, saturate it as much as possible by first dunking hair into a bowl of the solution, then pour the rest on top). Do not rinse; drip or lightly towel dry. Once you’re sure your hair has absorbed as much salt water as it can, apply a half teaspoon of olive oil into your palm, rub hands together, then dab on the outer layer of hair and the ends (avoid too much on bangs to avoid breakouts).
If you don’t have access to a xenon lamp (who does?), simply go out in the sun during mid-day. Do not put hair in a rubber band if you can avoid it. Even if it’s overcast, some rays are coming through. Middle of the summer and closer to the equator the better, but the goal is to try to get as much mid-day sun on your hair as can. Though it may take longer than your average Hawai’i surfer girl, you should see the effects. If you are going to be lying out in the sun without protection, do make sure to apply a natural, non-nano zinc sunscreen like Kukui Nui Sun Mud. Splay your hair out as much as possible. The hair that dries fastest and gets the most exposure seems to be the hair that bleaches out the most. And after it dries completely, wet hair again with a spray mist bottle that contains some salt water mix. Continue the process as needed to get the desired streaks/highlights you want.
There are a bunch of products that have come on the market, which can add to the look: goops and sprays designed to give you that “sexy, salty, wind-styled texture”. Problem is, much of those are filled with toxic chemical crap! One natural product we recommend is Hawaii Peeps Kaua’i Salt Spray. It’s actually a magnesium spray, which is what a lot of surfers and athletes spray on their skin to help with sore muscles and sports recovery. You can also spray it on your hair to create the crunchy beach hair look – and if you use it in the sun you can speed up the natural bleaching process! Simply dampen hair, spritz hair 7-10 times so it coats exposed hair from top to ends, then get yourself some UV rays. We love their Vetiver Vanilla – and it also comes in a Hawaii Coffee Berry too! Make sure to try some on the skin while you’re at it. (It’ll tingle a bit the first few times, similar to ocean water drying on the skin, but you’ll soon get used to it). It smells divine and you’ll look and feel amazing too!
Once you get the bleaching part done, use Hanalei Hair Oil – that’ll maintain the health of your hair naturally with baobab oil, kukui nut oil, jojoba oil, argan oil, awapuhi, olena, bamboo, supercritical extracts of mango and coconut. It’s a fave of local surfer grrls and paddlers.
So, that’s it. But hey, if you ever decide to cruise Hawai’i to charge some waves and go for the natural surfer girl hair… give us a buzz!
hey i liked your advise even though im right with my hair i think its also a way to get more girls out there in the surf and to do things the natural way. So i agree….. if you want to get true surfer girl hair then you need to deal with nature to truly get the look. xoxoxo
+peace+
🙂 It might be that people want to get surfer hair the natural way, but they live to far away from the ocean and a fake surf hairdo is the only thing to keep them sane… I’ve been there 😀
Thanks a lot for the advice :]
I love it when I get the ‘surfer girl’ style hair at the beach, but since I don’t live near one I can’t get it all the time.
Your advice is the only good peice I have found on the internet so cheerrrs(Y)
xxxxxx
Cool advice.
Havn’t tried it yet but will do 🙂
That Image could NOT look more photoshopped
You know, lots of girls…and guys… living here look “Photoshopped” in person…for reals.
who is the model at the top?
um, yeah, hate to brag, but that’s me…. 😉 about to paddle out… pipeline… big day … doesn’t my hair look good?! it’s amazing my bikini stayed on for like half the session!
Like the profile what are you doin tonight or this weekend?
the model at the top. do u have any more pics?
the girl in the red bikini with the exposed butt crack is stunning. it looks like she has some native Hawai’ian genes, by the facial structure. i mean, i haven’t seen many Hawai’ians, but based on photos i have seen of Polynesian peoples, just you know…
sorry, i don’t mean to be an internet perv – just admiring. interesting website, too. makes me so damn envious, though, to hear about the tropics whilst i can only surf in the frigid Great Lakes. sigh. 🙂
MIKE. I feel your pain. I surf the great lakes too. I actually got hailed on last November when I was surfing. Maybe I’ll see you at the Kincardine Pier sometime. It shouldn’t be too difficult to spot me. I look EXACTLY like the model in the red bikini. hahahaha. You just have to visualize me with out the 5mm thick wetsuit, boots, gloves, and hood.
Tea
coconutgirl, hate to be dense, but are you serious when you say that the girl in the red bikini is you? No offense if it is you, but that girl hardly looks like a surf girl, although she is pretty! Also, good tips for the surf girl hair, but as a fellow water girl, I don’t understand how anyone would want such abuse put on their hair! I have long hair and do everything in my power to prevent it from getting drier and more damaged. BTW, loved your tips on keeping hair healthy for surf gals. (:
arg, sarcasm doesn’t translate well over the internet! but you know, if for some reason I did look like that, I don’t see why I shouldn’t be able to surf! I have seen ***many*** a local wahine that looks just as hot as her that surfs beautifully and I’d hate to be prejudiced against a nice lookin blondie with sweet curves. Me, personally, I’m dark skinned (thank goodness!) and, like referenced, can’t keep a bikini on in good sized surf to save my life. Also my hair is more temperamental curls so I too can’t understand why anyone would want to purposefully damage their hair to make it look like they surf — which is why I wrote the original piece about the real surfer girl maintaining healthy hair (then again, I have curly hair and can’t understand why people damage their lovely straight hair to make it look curly either!). That be said, it is a nice look and I wish it wasn’t so harsh on the tresses. Thanks for the positives! xoxo and if you have any good surfer girl tips – hair or otherwise – send ’em in! see u in the water!

Well originally I meant that she doesn’t strike me as a surfer gal because, 1) I don’t know many girls who would wear such a skimpy bikini to surf even ankle smackers.. seems like a recipe for naked disaster; 2) Her arms are a lacking some muscle; 3) Her hair looks to healthy, ha ha! I didn’t mean it to sound like she’s too pretty to be a surfer wahine.. I think water women are some of the most beautiful, natural women on this earth who appreciate nature’s beauty at its purest. That being said, I’m like you.. very dark skinned (the constant surfing doesn’t help), and I have to literally tie my bikinis so tight I can’t breathe just to make sure I don’t have a wardrobe malfunction.
Anyway, love the site! Sending you good vibes from California..
Aloha!
Have you any recommendations as to how I can just get some hair?
Maybe you could try hair extensions, dying hair, highlights, but these things do cost a lot of money. Be careful what you do. Some of te hair treatments are really painful!
yah if you need your hair to keep from drying out. use a hair mask once a week it will clear it right up. and by the way coconut girl! you are NOT the model. I am! this photograph was taken about a year and a half ago in australia so dont belive coconut head over there. and yah im photo shoped a bit. if anyone can get there skin that evenly colored i envy you, and please tell me how hahaha
lotsa love<3 brandy!
hiya guys im charlotte from england. i have literally just found out about this site and i think its cool. im into surfing (i may not be good lol but i enjoy it) what do u all meen by surfer hair? lol like the coluor or the length… os is it just the curls?? xxxxx
I agree with the people who said that that girl doesn’t look like a true surfer girl. If she truly was she would have more muscle definition. It looks like a model picture but I’m not complaining because it just made my wallpaper. Coconutgirl where do you surf out of? I normally surf in New Jersey but I’m headed to Costa Rica Wednesday and I can’t wait.
Yeah, i guess it’s hard to imagine a purty, petite girl with less defined musculature might not be athletic or a true surfer girl…problem is, i see it all the time. some girls build obvious muscle. myself, my arms look pretty small even when i’m in the best shape. i’ll still paddle out on bigger days that scare off some of the big boyz. use whatcha got!
hey coconut girl,
i was curious the girl at the top with the red bikini, do you know by any chance, what brand that bikini is or where to get one like it?
i usually wear small bikinis at such and i was just curious and i would be so stoked if you knew.
thanks!
=)
hi there coconut girl! i think this tips are very helpful but I still have some questions! I have light brown hair and I surf 2 times a week (almost every week), but i still can’t make my hair blond (I don’t use anything in my hair). There are some rumors that surfwax blonds your hair is that true…(how can I aply it?) That recipe you wrote…does it realy works ? (can you be more specific about the oil type?)
Is there any secret more?
Hope you to answer me
kiss**
Aloha Alexis, So, there are really two aspects to surfer girl hair – one being the style (like you just got out of the surf) and the other being the color (sun-kissed). My question to you is, where do you surf??? Are you lacking the sun needed to bleach it? You really need the sun factor, combined with the salt water. Otherwise, you might want to not rinse your hair out so much after, or add the recipe, and continue your day trying to absorb as much of the sun as u can. As far as the oil, any will work, even cooking oil. It attracts the heat and holds it – just like when cooking. I don’t know about surf wax, but every time i get surf wax in my hair (slow day doing headstands on a longboard kine) all i know is it sucks. Hope this help some.
FYI – even in Cali I know my brown hair takes longer to lighten up, but hawaii takes a few sessions. So if this doesn’t work, doctor recommends a closer to the equator surf trip where the more potent sun will surely do the trick for your stubborn brown hair. xo
I am sure many pictures on websites use models. That girl in the picture is very cute and she has a nice backside (looks like she is squeezing her butt cheeks and it was photoshopped to smoothen out imperfections). I have worked in the magazine field and know first hand about this , so don’t preach any “it’s natural” sermons…please. Anyways, to get great surfer hair….it helps if you have wavy hair. Either way…wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner and comb in the shower after applying conditioner. Rinse and wrap you hair in a towel. NO NOT brush or comb it again, instead, take off the towel and spray a generous amount of leave in conditioner and a gently spead on a little bit of mousse or leave in conditioning hair lotion. Herbal essence has a coconut/mango repair conditioning leave in lotion/creme for hair. DO NOT run it through forcing your fingeers through your hair.
All you need now is time to air dry! If you can’t use a round brush and blowdrier to dry the hair framing your face. Use a round brush because it adds a little lift and curl on the ends. Use a curling iron if you need to, to give the 3-4 strand some waves (I have to do this, because my hair is wavy and I want the fron wavy too). Spray a bit of leave in conditioner and twist…let it go and go about your day. the rest of your hair is still damp. but it looks good because you took care of the front.
This may sound like a lot of work, but it takes …literally, less than 10 minutes and only if you dry and curl the front as i mentioned. if you skip the curling and/or drying..it takes less time!
As a bonus, spray and coconut or beachy scented body splash on your hair. 😀
Hi coco,
who da hell is that gorgeous babe in red bikini on the picture from article about surfer babe hair?
unbelievable… wooow
greetings from good ol’ germany
bobby
So random thought…for those of us with INCREDIBLY curly hair…whats the best way to make it look halfway decent at the beach? between salt and wind, my hair turns into a rats nest and looks like an afro and doesnt get that natural wave like the real surfer girl gets… and im far too lazy to bring gel to the beach to keep it somewhat appealing.
SURFER GIRL BEACH HAIR FOR CURLY HAIRED GRRLZ: there are pros and cons to wind, and that has to do with humidity. a nice dry wind can straighten curly hair quite nicely. with humidity of course, voila, the rats nest.
using a good CONDITIONER that has the effect of SILKENING the hair is important (as opposed to conditioner that “thickens” hair). Also, while your hair is still damp, utilizing oil like JOJOBA should keep the hair less dry, more heavy (pulling out the curl, like when it’s wet), less likely to knot up. Of course, at the end of the day you’ll want to wash and condition it out. And don’t use too much oily hair products on the bangs or you’ll get an oily forehead/face.
sometimes if i’m at the beach, desperate, with no product I’ll just keep water down the hair – but you have to stay on it. sometimes SEA WATER works better than regular water for this. Of course, if you are at the beach at night, bonfire and all, and have a beer handy, a little BEER keeps it sticky and straight and gets the frizz out.
hope some of those tips help – if i think of more i’ll add ’em on!
oh yeah, and if you have A HAT, something that fits tight like a beenie -always keep one in your car- those are great to put on ur head for like ten minutes to simply flatten hair out (add a light mist first if needed). It’s a short term fix -again, depending on humidity, usually keeps hair decently flat for at least an hour. BRAIDING HAIR super tight for about 10 minutes is also an option when there’s no hat around! And again, if it’s already in poof-mode add a light mist of water or beer first. xoxo
I just wanted to say I enjoyed your article on how to get surfer girl hair. I really laughed at your “Plus, if you simply don’t wash your hair too often and let it get a little gunky, throw in a dash of sand, stick your head out the car window” suggestion. You may not have been trying to be comedic, but it was funny. I don’t surf, but I have tried it. I’d like to try it again. My husband & I have even tossed around the idea of getting lessons. We boogie board, is that what they call it these days? We live in Florida and I am only minutes from the beach. However, I work full-time and don’t get to the beach as often as one would think. Also, we don’t get the kind of waves you do in Hawaii, but there is a decent number of surfers here in Florida. I work outside for a living and have the “farmer/construction” tan and my hair is lighter from the sun and salt air. However, I’m wearing a hard hat much of the time. I’ve been thinking of getting my hair cut & colored to mimic the surfer style. I have naturally dark blonde/light brown hair (with natural blonde & red highlights & uhem… a few white). I’m not old, I’m 30-something that looks 20-something, but think the hairstyle would be a good look for me. I have short hair though, not long. Imay try your suggestion, although I agree with you about not really wanting the dried, brittle texture. I’m a wash and go kind of person, but my hair is very healthy and naturally soft even though it is thick hair. Again, I just wanted to mention that I liked your article. Take care.
very nice article! I will try your tips this summer
hey coconutgirl!
I absolutely loved your article about how to get surfer girl hair! its by far the best one ive come across on the web!
However i live in ireland, so as you probably know it really lacks sun! i do go surfing and wakeboarding and practically evey water sport imaginable but it is rarly sunny while doing it so it is almost impossible to achieve this look with your ingredients and the natural sun!
So i was wondering what is a ‘xenon lamp’ that you mentioned?! If i put the ingredients in my hair and use one, will it make it go blonder?! Can i buy one on the internet?!
cheers! x
Again, to everyone. NO dude that photo is not photoshopped and I do tons of modelling.
I am not or was not trying to portray that I am a surfer. yes I have tried, yes I love it, so why does my hair look so good, because I am not in the salt water 24/7. I go to the salon once a month and have oil treatments done to keep the shine and use an avacado/lemon mask 2 times a week.
Blend up a ripe avacodo and mix with lemon juice (not sure if you should try this if you are not a natural blonde as it does lighten your hair) and just apply to hair. I usually sit for an hour with a cap around my hair and then wash it out and shampoo regularly.
If anyone is still wondering why my hair looks so damn amazing.
try it out dude!
to stephanie do you have other pictures to show?
post them please
Hahahaha that’s sick. Who ever mind if the model is photoshopped or not, you’ll only know her from this picture, and she looks stunning, nothing else matters.
Anyway, i’m a guy you know, and i used to do body board untill 20, then i had to move to Madrid (I’m Spanish, from Cantabria, and now moving to surf). I’ve dark brown hair, but trough years on the beach, now i have a little shiny red look when it’s sunny.
I want to lighten my hair, not become blonde, well, maybe on the tops, but what do you think about it? Will i loose my red shine following your guidance? i love it ^-^
On summer, you can almost say that i’m living on the beach and after that my hair looks less dark but then in 2 months or so, i becomes dark again, i tried some camomile shampoos but did nothing and as i have oily hair, i’m not sure if applying olive oil will be a good idea or not
hey my name is amanda and i love the girl in the red bikini because she is pretty
hey amanda, you should luv someone because they’re pretty on the inside… lotsa people who only focus on how they look, like the red bikini chick for example, are often really ugly once you get past the superficial. fyi
okay, to clear this up… tho some may have misinterpreted sarcasm in the comments section (no, I would not wear a skimpy bikini while surfing pipe), the author of this article is not Kate Bosworth, Sophie Mulanovich, Sanoe Lake, Chelsea Georgeson OR the “model” in the red bikini. These are simply visual examples of surfer girl hair. As mentioned in the article AND the comments section, my hair is dark brown and curly (tho it straightens out with blond highlights the more I surf). I also have dark sun-lovin skin (not haole skin cancer white).
The girl in the red bikini, tho I defended her as a potential surfer because I know many girls better looking than her who can kill it in the water, is in actuality not a surfer –tho she sez she’s tried it a few times. She also admits she’d rather spend her time at the salon getting her hair to look like she surfs (read her comment for tips).
On the other hand, the wahines who contribute to CGW are all full-fledged surfer girls (who tend more on the side of maintaining/conditioning inevitable surf girl hair…as opposed to figuring out ways to get it). My pict is in the header.
As for Ms. “faker” Steph with redundant emails accusing us of pretending we are her, and I quote her sweetness “You dont look like that and probably never will”… (yikes!)… Steph, “DUDE”, it may be a leap for you to comprehend, I’m sure there are girls out there who want to look like you…but, seriously, we’d rather surf like Sophie or Chelsea! Maybe some day you’ll understand – ’til then, have fun at the salon!
that ass is so airbrushed !
please Mama…no foolin’
Yer a surfer gurl, so you can kick my ass
fer sure, but no way…
that butt is so artistically enhanced…
at least the image.
I’d bite it anyway, butt…
you know what I’m sayin’
hot!
Mahalo for the site!
xo
Hi Coconoutgirl,
thank u for posting the advice. I would love my hair to look like this style. This evening after working I will try to look like the same. I hope that it will work. Have fun while surfing…
hey i was wonderin if the lemon juice or the salt water thing would work on my hair which is a mousy brown or would it make it go a orange colour?
I find this article hilarious!
What a nightmare for the person who tries to fix their hair into the “surfer look”!!
However i am glad you included the remedy- but still…
On a positive note, if they bathe in the salt enough their skin will surely look as good as the model included in all this. ha ha
There certainly would be no arguments about photCHOpping then!
Good work.
Ahhhh! All those sun-bleached blondes. Lovely “eye candy!!” And…it will be soooo easy to diagnose that melanoma. One of my favourite neoplasms to diagnose. Hey….keep those tanned butts and faces coming! It’s paying for my Lambo!

Hey! i absolutely love, love love love the surf look but i am a bit of a girly girl and do like to wear make up, not tons tho, but i do also love the surf girl look. I live in manchester, wigan so don’t have the weather (sun) to get that style of hair everyday but when i’m on holiday i do try to. It’s just that im not skinny but i’m not fat, just average but desperately want to be toned and have a really nice beach body so i feel more confident and comfortable in things i wear. Is there any tips you can give me other than go to the gym because i don’t want to get all sweaty in front of ppl, sounds bad but i really jus don’t want to. I’m at college doing my A levels, so feel i dnt have time to join a swimming class or dance class etc, any tips for things i can do at home?
Sorry for the long message, jus feeling bit down at the minute. Thankyou 🙂 x
Mel – Okay, only exercising at home….the problem is motivation. If you are not really motivated, chances are sticking to a routine will be hard. That’s why sometimes it’s better to go somewhere where others push you. And you already nixed swimming – which is the activity i’d recommend as the one that can quickly get a body in shape (especially in a easy gravity way).
I remember I had this friend, she was so body conscious -to what i think is an unhealthy, too skinny extreme- but she did have some at home sure fired techniques to slim. She was always moving – it was like her life was a musical and everything she did she was bopping around… washing the dishes, she’d be bobbing; cleaning the house, would be a musical; talking on the phone, seemed like a dance class; when I would come to her house and knock on the door, she’d always answer in a jog.
I’d throw into that mix making many movements into a stretch, elongate the body, open yourself up. Also: get a hula hoop, a jump rope, mini-trampoline and download podcasts/get some dvds of yoga, pilates, ball, and other exercise classes to mix it up. Just have fun! Enjoy your body. One last tip – you ever hear of MBT shoes? There are some copy-cats but these shoes are the shit (okay, xpensive shit but worth the investment). Wearing them just an hour or two a day (then increase time) and you’ll feel the burn in all the most important places: butt, thighs, stomach. Try http://www.swissmasai.co.uk/ Wear them to work (while keeping a regular pair there to change into if need be) or when shopping at the mall.
Once you start feeling more confident you might feel comfortable trying new things out in the world – including dancing, swimming, and who knows, hopefully surfing. Put a few pounds in a savings account every week and get that Hawaii surf trip fund going! Make a bet with family or friends to inspire you to lose weight / get in shape. Do it with a friend, try a web site like stickk.com … Hey, the process is individual — you will find something that works for you if you put some energy into it.
Good luck!!!!!
I don’t mean to be rude, but I came onto this article to see how I might achieve ‘Surf Girl Hair’ because I live in the middle England! It’s all very well and good you being sarcastic about achieving a fake look, but not everyone can just scoot on over to the beach in Hawaii! It’s never sunny here, so some of us just have to fake it…
I dont know if it’s only on sale in the UK but fructis surf gum and surf hair gel spray is awesome.
Beth x
With aloha and the best of intentions… can u please read the article b4 commenting – because if u do so it states in the intro paragraph, “Surfer Girls whose hair turns dry and brittle from the daily effects of salt and sun may not understand those who want to purposefully put their hair through such abuse. And similarly…I would find it absurd for anyone who has sun/ocean access to try to capitalize on one piece of the puzzle, like “the look” instead of simply going for the whole the experience. But I do have sympathy for those who simply can’t get the look the natural way” So yes, if you DO NOT HAVE SUN AND SURF ACCESS – I SYMPATHIZE – and that’s why I posted the recipe! okay! That aside – mahalo for adding some of your own tips.
Ok, I’m way late in the game, but honestly, I don’t know why the hate on girls who want to look like the girls they look up to: the surf chicks.
And frankly, where I surf (fresh water), we’re not worrying about how fried our hair gets; we’re concerned if the ice flow is going to tear through our wetsuit.
Having textured “surf hair” is really something special for me, because that means I’ve
1. Finally been in warm water
2. Finally been in water with even sets!
So recreating that hair, for myself at least, is just a way to look back on better surf conditions.
again, no need b all reactionary. please read the full article, k. it is fine if you cant get “surfer girl hair” naturally. no one is hating u for it…really! much sympathy for the cold water – it was sweet, warm, hawaii barrels all morning today. sun and rainbows and nice blond streaks.
[…] This would be a prime example of that. I can say that 11 out of 10 surf gals I’ve come in contact with hate the fact that anyone would try to emulate us. Frankly, I take it as flattery. Not only do they respect the fact that we do a bad-ass sport, but they also want to look like us?! Fuckin’ sweet dude. […]
Hey, sounds like pretty good advice. I’ll have to try it! I lived in Hawaii for 3 years but unfortunately I was also in the air force and never had the oportunity to grow my hair long but my tan was amazing. Now I live in southern california and I go to Laguna all the time for skimboarding. My hair is much longer and little by little it is getting lighter. I just rub lemons in my hair and sit for about an hour or two while working on my tan. Also if you have brown hair I think it will work the same for you. It will bring out your natural highlights. It might not be blonde but it will be lighter! But I’m definately going to add this to the mix this weekend. Thanks a lot!
By the way why does everyone have to hate on the photo? My wife surfs and she’s small and petit. She’s not all ripped from surfing either. She’s mexican so I guess she’s not your tipical surfer girl either.
I live in southern california and everyone seems to have long beachy looking hair my hair is dirty blonde and gets almost white in the summer when i surf everyday a couple weeks ago i decided to mess around and die it brown and it looks good but i miss the beachy look thankss for the advice much love<3
Ugh seriously?! You got the magic combo of sun, rainbows, and blonde streaks?! Jealousy, man. You know what I got this morning? 2 feet of snow. Seriously, in April! Haha… man… I’m moving to Hawaii.
LA run-off helps bleach your hair too.
hello…
moi c est el alami jaime le surfe et je veux la vrais technic and the good way pour bien surfing send me if you can how to star pleas a bien tot
sounds like good advice 🙂 I live in Australia but it’s winter here so I may as well give it a go 🙂
Sooo jealous of everyone who lives near the beach. Live in England where the weather is always disgusting! I was definately born in the wrong country as my soul is a surfer girl! Training to be a nurse right now, as soon as I am qualified me and my boyfriend are up sticks and leaving the UK for traveling and don’t think we’ll ever come back!!! Want to settle in Hawaii or Costa Rica, it’s the thoughts of those times are all tha get me through my long shifts Cant wait!!! xx
Well, Hawaii can always benefit from some GOOOOD nurses. Hope to c u sooon!
I can’t believe you didn’t mention spit. xo
i didn’t mention spit?!? I’m hoping it’s just because it’s sooo obvious. Actually, I was just sucking on some frizzy strands the other day.
you guys are fucking gay. kooks.
Hey Tyler eachone-teachone@hotmail.com – thanks for your insight. Unlike our inanities, your insights contribute greatly to the overall higher consciousness of the world wide web and the world in general. Will take the non-kook-like commentary into consideration. You mean gay as in homosexual, right? Just checking.
Coconutgirl, best response ever. love it. *high five*
Wow I really wish I was in hawaii;) currently I’m sitting in one of the most landlocked towns in britain and watching the rain:/ but the second we get any sun I’ll try this (I know you say it works even if it’s overcast but beleive me we take ‘overcast’ to a whole new level int his bloody town:L) Bit jealous of your surfing tbh;) If you ever fancy a rainy week of sheep and mud give me a call and we can swap lives for a bit;) xxx
Yeah don’t hate. tons of girls look like that in Cali too, even better looking ones too. it’s a babe-fest
Could you please translate your site into German as I’m not so comfortable reading it in English? I’m getting tired of using Google Translate all the time, there is a little WordPress plugin called like global translator which will translate all your pages automatically- that will make reading posts on your sweet blog even more enjoyable. Cheers dude, Kendall Bulter!
sry k, im on the wordpress.com – cant load plugins! may transition soon tho, check back!
Hi Coconut Girl
I had a quick question. Will this leave your hair orange like lemon juice can??
Thanks
Veronica, As darker hair colors shift to lighter/blonds there may be some auburn highlights that come out, but they are more subtle, similar to how it would occur naturally. Most surfer hair streaks straight to blond. It’s certainly not like what happens when applying lemon juice to one’s hair, or Sun-In kine products, which leave you with that oft icky orange. Take advantage of summer – good luck! cgrrl
Hey,
What if you don’t have any sea salt and I live in almost the middle of no where and I don’t want to do the 45 minute drive to town jsut to go and try to find it (It waste’s way to much gas on this old car of mine.). If I were to use just table salt or rock salt, would it have the same affect?
Unrefined salt has sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium. Iodized salt has different properties: 97% to 99% sodium chloride + caking agents. But try the rock salt, dissolve it in a little warm water. It should work, we mostly just want it to dry the hair. But… you might want to consider enjoying “Real salt” or (unprocessed, unbleached) sea salt instead of regular table salt – much more healthy; mineral balanced. So, let us know how it worked.
We are Surf Lessons By Stone in Florida! We are getting ready to take a young man out in the water in a couple of weeks.
His name is Cody, was prom king last year, was in marching band, can play just about any instrument, not a jock and just a really nice guy.
No biggy right?
Cody is 100% blind and always has been.
He has had a little board time behind my jet ski on a lake in central Florida and we are gearing up to get him in the water
in a few weeks.

Hello from Australia
I have a braid on the side of the back of my head and have been told that if I undo it, coat it with surf board wax and get it rebraided that it will stay in as the wax is like water proof and it wont dred. What do you think of this?
Cheers,
that sounds like a horrible idea. might as well have dreds

Awesome! I live in Florida and try to surf haha I’m not so great but my hair still fries and turns bleach blonde. I found this cuz I was trying to make my hair more healthy and protected lol I had no idea people wanted fried hair! At least its more controlled this way. But if you have more tips to keep it healthy and stuff or maybe what conditioner or other products you would recommend (: thanks!
Well, I agree with you re: looking for things to protect my hair! That’s why this article came first: https://coconutgirlwireless.wordpress.com/2007/03/29/secret-hair-tips-for-the-surfer-girl/ 🙂
My choice of products changes often, but right now my shampoo/conditioners of choice are: John Masters Organics Zinc & Sage Shampoo with Conditioner (typically don’t like “combo” shampoo-conditioners but this one is the exception! great for Surfer Girls on the go. & smells amazing btw); Acure Argan Shampoo & Conditioner (mostly organic; biodegradable). Also use argan/hair oils & take Omegas3>6>9/consume coconut oil & water/ mineral drops + horsetail(silica). Yup, condition the hair from the inside and out!
Read the article tho for the best tips like getting your hair completely wet b4 exposing it to salt water. Good luck!
Cool article, very different indeed 🙂

If I put the solution before sleeping , and the next day i expose my hair to the sun , is it still working?
Great write up, thx!
