I also have the the new Ajax results when I am logged out. It says the phrase below in a blue box when I type.

Welcome to Google Instant
Feelings of euphoria and weightlessness are normal. Don't be alarmed learn more.

This is the learn more link [google.com...]

Google Instant is a new search enhancement that shows results as you type. We are pushing the limits of our technology and infrastructure to help you get better search results, faster. Our key technical insight was that people type slowly, but read quickly, typically taking 300 milliseconds between keystrokes, but only 30 milliseconds (a tenth of the time!) to glance at another part of the page. This means that you can scan a results page while you type.

The most obvious change is that you get to the right content much faster than before because you don’t have to finish typing your full search term, or even press “search.” Another shift is that seeing results as you type helps you formulate a better search term by providing instant feedback. You can now adapt your search on the fly until the results match exactly what you want. In time, we may wonder how search ever worked in any other way.

Wow - looks fun at first blush. Certainly is disruptive for SEO.

Bad move for me by Google. It's like they are forcing the I'm feeling lucky button on everyone. The predicative results direct what I am looking for. Searchers will stop typing to see what the heck is going on with the browser.
They get to choose a result before the full entry is made. The only way to see the actual results is to hit enter, then the results change.

I agree. Let people find using their own terms. Stats will change and is not going to be that easy as the complains of the results (pages) this time we will talk about screenshots of the auto-complete.

I'm seeing it in Google Chrome right now. Its pretty cool. Will be interesting to see how it affects the SERPS.

I just tried a six word query and Google guessed it after 1 word and 1 character. I like this, as it may direct people to more specific long tail pages. IMHO, not many people would bother to type all six words, now they won't have to.

Has anyone seen what the referrers look like for these new ajax results? And can the keyword(s) be determined from these new ajax generated result?

I just tested in Google Chrome. The referrer was there for an adwords click.

I don't see what people are complaining about. It's a pretty useful feature, and if you don't like it just turn it off.

I find it distracting, but maybe that's just because I'm not used to it.

The eye may be quicker than the hand, but I type faster than this thing works, so it seems to always be a few keystrokes behind, and it's easier just to finish the query than to stop and scan the results.

I can see how after a bit of adjusting, this could be a useful tool. However, I'm not at all sure that the benefit is worth the effort it must have taken to create.

We really don't know if it will hurt or help or traffic this will be inrtesting to see and Brett maybe you can start gathering some stats from some well know sites your close to and see if this new roll out effect their traffic to such a degree it is worth bringing up in vegas.

Interesting... I'm noticing that once I've entered a search and am on the serps page, if I hit the space bar, the page scrolls down.

Brett

From what I can see if you are logged in there is an option to turn off the instant search in your search settings.

I can see how this might be annoying for those who are not logged in and want to do a search.

Just noticed something interesting: if you wander off the "reservation" of Google suggested queries, it starts showing you the "did you mean..." results for partially typed words. It's like it's trying _very_ hard to keep you within the space of acceptable queries.

Average users won't know to turn it off.

I think we will see a stronger shift in traffic toward the top results. Most people can't see all ten results without scrolling down (in IE I only see 1-7), so many will probably refine their search to get a new set of instant results rather than scroll down to check positions 8-10.

does it throw adwords in with these instant SERPs too?

DiscoStu

@J_RaD yes, for searches that trigger adwords ads I only see the first 4 organic results in FF. Nothing new about that really, but I think a lot of people will rather modify their search slightly to alter the results they see rather than scrolling down. Will be keeping an eye on traffic changes from terms below the fold

I agree with DiscoStu, also I bet we'll see a drop in unusual or quirky ways of saying something - widgetry vs. just plain widgets. Whem you see that the results for "widgets" match your query, why would you bother to type "widgetry?"

Should be interesting to watch how searchers adapt to this.

Actually you can turn it off by not being loged into your account. I very seldom stay loged into my Google account anyway and when this launched I had to log back into to see it.

Yes it does bring up adwwords as well in the seaches and they change as the results change.

It was that way for Google suggest as well (which is what this is really - just completing the searches - instead of providing the suggestions)

However - it is about 1,000 times more obvious - as your serps goes from normal - to completely blank - once you cross the threshold. A reporter during the conference Google held - a Ms. #*$!sky - brought this up :)

[edit] darn foiled here too![/edit]

This features is bad really bad ! It forces you to advertise and that is what google want s they want to make more money . Currently 70 % of clicks are on natural results and 30 % on advertising and google wants to turn that around to make more money. The problem today is that if they think that way forget about starting a business because small business can't advertise in google money making keyword the cost of a click us around 15 dollars a click and there is no way a small business can advertise and make money unless they do some consulting or sell "wind" meaning something that cost 0 with a 100% profit

if google moves toward that feature forget about starting a small business be employed by a multinational and forget innovation... It sadly seems to be the way the world is heading...

Is this going to encourage more long tail searches or actually have the opposite effect? It seems like some people planning to type in a longer phrase may give up on typing that longer phrase if they see something that catches their eye while typing.

NSFW

...meaning (for those who, like me, had to look it up on Google) "Not Safe For Work"....

That was mentioned during the event. A woman whose first name contains a text string that would get filtered even by WebmasterWorld's text filter asked the question because her name couldn't be found under the new interface.

Hard to say whether they'll address this somehow. There was discussion about Google's not wanting in particular to show inappropriate material, a consequence of the new interface. .

I'd conjecture that they may ultimately set up various filter levels... maybe even figure out how this woman's name could be typed in. WebmasterWorld would have to figure out a way around it too, if she ever showed up here. ;)
