Today we wish a very happy birthday to a good friend of SoulTracks and an all-time great singer, Ms. Angela Bofill, who was born on May 2, 1954. In a career spanning four decades, she graced both soul and jazz with a level of excellence that has kept so many of her song on “spin” years after they were originally released. And the health problems that plagued her beginning in the mid 00’s perhaps made her longtime fans appreciate her even more, even as she courageously and successfully fought physical limitations.

(April 30, 2024) “Your Renaissance,” the new song by drummer and producer Lil’ John Roberts, is a relaxing and contemplative tune created during a time of tension and upheaval. The conception of this song and Elevation, the upcoming album that will include “Your Renaissance,” was the troubled days of 2020.

During that time, the world confronted first the COVID 19 pandemic that took so many lives and then the racial and social justice upheaval that followed the murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbury, and the unjustified police killing of Breonna Taylor.

Happy Heavenly Birthday, to the legendary Tammi Terrell, born April 29, 1945. Beautiful and possessing an incredible voice, Tammi Terrell was a shooting star who rose to become Motown’s hottest singer only to tragically have her career and life stolen from her at her peak by cancer. 

Jazz/funk bassist Christian de Mesones makes multiple statements by titling his upcoming album You Only Live Twice. de Mesones is a fan of James Bond films and the album’s title is a nod toward the fifth movie in the 007 franchise.

The Detroit area has produced some of R&B's most popular singers, from Smokey Robinson to Kem. Another vocalist following in that tradition of soulful crooners from his hometown is Smoke Jones.

He is not only a singer but also a bandleader known for blending smooth soul with a jazzy delivery. His new single - a love ballad called “Say Less” - falls into this category.
