As the National Hunt season was wrapping up at Punchestown I headed away for a few weeks to Spain to recharge the batteries and take a short break from the sport.
The region of Spain I was in has no horse racing and no betting offices, but that doesn’t stop the population from gambling. Lottery is the primary form of gambling with kiosks and shops dedicated to these numbers games dotted around every town and uniformed ticket sellers manning the entrances to most big grocery stores to ensure those looking for their punting fix are well catered for.
My Racing StorySponsored By Tote
I'm from Allenstown between Navan and Kells in Co Meath. I grew up there with my three older brothers and we were all involved in horses and ponies growing up. My dad bred and produced a lot of half-breds, so we broke ponies, hunted and did the usual pony club. They would have been produced and resold, and we worked hard at it. My dad still does a bit now as well. My brothers helped out in the yard and my older brother, Greg Harford, was into racing first. He was an amateur rider and he started off with Michael Cunningham and in his later years went to Noel Meade. He was a pretty successful amateur there. I used to go pointing and racing with Greg and that was how I got into racing.

By John O'Riordan - SPANISH TENOR stands out here on his return to claiming grade. The Ado McGuinness-trained veteran won a similar race at this track for previous connections almost three years ago before subsequently being claimed. A revelation since then, the now 10-year-old who continues in fine fettle, should make all under Cian MacRedmond. El Bello has to be a serious threat now that he reverts to his optimum trip. The grey found a mile stretching his stamina last time but had been running well over this distance previously. Roderick may find this an inadequate test but first-time blinkers could enable the eight-year-old to travel better in the early stages. If doing so, few will be finishing stronger than the Denis Hogan-trained gelding.
