This 1937 Aston Martin 15/98 short-chassis is one of approximately 175 examples of the 2-Litre platform produced between 1936 and 1939 and is among just 25 fitted with a drophead-coupe bodywork from E.D. Abbott of Farnham in Surrey. Chassis A9/825/SC is said to have remained under the stewardship of a former chairman of the Aston Martin Owners Club of North America for 25 years, at the beginning of which it underwent a refurbishment by Steel Wings of Warminster, Pennsylvania. Following completion of the project in 1998, the car placed second in its class at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, and under subsequent ownership, is said to have won its class at the 2017 Manhasset Concours d’Elegnace. Purchased by the seller on BaT in April 2020, the car is finished in red over black and is powered by a 1,949cc SOHC inline-four mated to a four-speed manual transmission with synchromesh on its top three gears. Additional features include twin SU carburetors, mechanically actuated finned drum brakes, hydraulic rear shock absorbers, body-color 17” wire wheels, a beige convertible top, and a dickey seat. 4/30 Video Inspiration—The Mighty MEL Is The First Daytona 500 Winner* (With a Big Fat Asterisk)
Today is 4/30, the final day of our big block of big block content, and we’re turning back the clock to the late 1950s to talk about the 430 MEL engine—the big block that time forgot. The MEL (Mercury Edsel Lincoln) engine family was introduced alongside the smaller FE V8 in 1958 and was, for all intents and purposes, a boat motor—one used to power FoMoCo’s most luxurious land yachts. Even though it was the largest and most powerful engine offered in Detroit at the time (in 400-horsepower Super Marauder trim), the 430ci MEL V8 under the hood of a Continental was burdened with 13 lb. of car for each of its horsepower. The MEL engine’s might was more pronounced in the smaller Ford Thunderbird, and that’s the model that stock car builders Holman and Moody prepped for the freshly-paved banks of Bill France’s new Daytona International Speedway in 1959.
