Navigation

You can navigate the site using clickable maps like the one on this page or the drop down menus. There are other resources to help you, including the Alphabetical Index, the Site Index, the Accommodation Index, the Late Availability listings page, the Search boxes on most pages (usually below a clickable map), the Site Information section, the What's On? and What's New? pages and Scotfax. In addition we have collections of links to resources such as Tour Operators and Watersports. Or simply visit a random feature page.

Today's header slides are of beautiful Melrose Abbey, one of the four great abbeys of the Scottish Borders; and a view of Sandwood Bay in north-west Sutherland, in our view the most magnificent beach in the UK.

In Focus

Tolquhon Castle Aberdeenshire is home to many superb castles, often in good repair and complete with fixtures and furnishings. A visitor to the area is therefore spoiled for choice, and this may be why Tolquhon Castle, approximately mid way between Tarves and Pitmedden, is so easily overlooked. Which is a shame, because anywhere else in the country, Tolquhon would be much better appreciated for what it is, a remarkably complete courtyard castle built in the 1580s. ( More ...)

20 May 685: The Battle of Dunnichen or Nechtansmere, near Forfar. King Ecgfrith of Northumbria is decisively defeated by the Picts, paving the way for the development of a separate Scottish nation. The battle is later depicted on a cross slab at Aberlemno Kirk.

20 May 1685: The Earl of Argyll sails from Holland to Campbeltown with 300 men in an attempted uprising. It fails and he is executed.

20 May 1883: The death in Edinburgh of William Chambers, the publisher who became Lord Provost of Edinburgh.

21 May 1424: James I is crowned at Scone.
