I got the beef pie, and the fillings were a bit salty to my taste. The bread was crispy outside and pretty fresh.
The shop was quite small and hidden. You have to walk down a couple steps on a stair to get in the shop.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Nov 12, 2016
In the spectrum of pie types, I would normally choose sweet over savory but the East Village hide-away / hole-in-the-wall Australian-run Tuck Shop has meat and veggies pie which are good for late-night bite or a midday nosh.
As you enter, the shop is a narrow basement level shop with a few tiny tales and bar area. There is a variety of meat and veggie pies. There are special pies of the day. We asked what the special pie and we were told that there wasn't a special one.
We ordered the traditional meat pie for $6 and the mac and cheese veggie pie. All the pies are $6 each. We also tried the pork 'n sage roll for $4. These pies and roll are filling but there are not extremely large. I would be interested in tasting the curry-flavored or bbq one as well. They served beer and their own Convict brand soda (Australians says cordials instead of soda). I can not comment on the drinks but it is a good offering to have.
Finally, we ordered the lamingtons dessert for $3. This item is a standard dessert in Australia. The lamingtons is a sponge cake with an outer coating of chocolate and coconut. The dessert was a-ok but the cake was a little dry.
The décor had dive bar vibe with Australia items such as Kangaroos crossing signs and koalas. There was a meat pie eating cup from 2010 which looked interesting. There is also another location in the Chelsea Market as well.Helpful 3Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Nov 8, 2016
It is a small place, cozy, with few counter seats and 2 metal tables put together by red brick wall. It is not a place people will have a long, three-course-dinner type of place, so the set up is enough for what they offer.
We ordered their Traditional Meat Pie, Pork 'N' Sage Roll, and Mac 'N' Cheese Pie. The traditional meat pie is filled with ground beef. Simple, comfortable, and warm you up from the inside. The pie crust was thin, flaky, kind of dry as they were not fresh out of the oven, but came out from their heated show window. It had good amount of seasoning, with a subtle kick to it. Nothing fancy, but good old fashion meat pie.
Pork and sage roll was a pretty good size, packed with pork, sage, and veggies. It was again, meaty and packed with flavor. It was not as tasty as the meat pie, but added veggies and sage stuffed with meat gave different kind fresh flavor.
Mac 'N' Cheese pie was not as good as I wanted it to be. It sounded better than it tasted. I t was gooey but I wanted it to be more cheesy. It was a bit dried, again from sitting in a heated show window for a while.
The staff was ok, nice enough, very chilled environment. A relaxing but quick snack stop to get a hot savory pie. I heard they have a daily special pie, but on this day, we were told they didn't have any special pie on that day. Bummer...Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 55361022691Sep 24, 2018
Utter perfection and charm and deliciousness and the nicest team in town. They're going to be so, so missed. This is the biggest bummer ever. Also I am a heathen for having not reviewed them until this my last supper.

A lovely Australian snack shop with affordable bites and a friendly staff.
Been here twice, tried the following:
Traditional meat pie - a little fatty, tasty, $6
Chicken pot pie - incredible crust, lacking a bit of flavor on the inside, $6
Pork and sage roll - life changing, $4
Homemade ginger soda -perfectly spicy and sweet, $2.50
The staff here are too kind, and the options are just enough that you'll never get bored. The brussel sprouts also look fantastic.
On our way out, the kind cashier (with adorable Aussie accent) offered us 2 free "party pies" -mini traditional pies that are meant to give away, never to sell.
This type of customer love and great food deserves 5 stars, and I will definitely return.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Wahed K.Queens, NY6747911666Apr 11, 2018
I was in the area, wanted a snack and beer, noticed this hole in the wall and decided to try it out.
Went for the classic beef pie. The minced beef was a bit on the salty side and not a lot of flavor but overall it wasn't too bad. I liked the crust. I asked for a pilsner recommendation and they hooked me up with a pretty decent local brew. The lady behind the counter seemed nice.
Not a bad place to chill out for a few minutes but I wouldn't recommend coming in with more than 1 or 2 people.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Xiao Ling Z.Queens, NY199211510Mar 9, 2017
I have to say, the reviews here are pretty spot on and I don't really know what more value I could add by explaining minute details-- so I'll just tell you about my experience.
1. This place definitely feels like a hole in the wall and is super cute. I especially like the artsy wall with the bench.
2. We definitely got lucky with service, the guy manning the place today was SUPER FRIENDLY-- almost too friendly (like how when people are super nice in movies when they serve human meat or something-- please note that I am just joking and in no way alleging that the meat stuffed in here is anything but what they claim it is).
3. The pies were not served fresh, but pretty darn good none the less-- it kind of felt like having beef patties (or chicken patties... whichever meat you chose). We ordered the steak pie and the beef with cheese pie. The steak pie was a little too heavily salted, but the beef with cheese pie was -lifts up pinky- simply marvelous.
4. We also got the mashed potatoes with gravy on the side. The gravy is vegetarian (apparently)-- but it was just right for me in terms of flavor. I dipped ERRTHANG in that little piece of delicious juice.
Would probably come again, unless I find a better meat pie place.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - 463172322Dec 22, 2019Updated review
Sadly, this place and its sibling locations have closed. I wish there were other decent meat pie options to take its place.
Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Feb 13, 2010Previous reviewI go out of my way to visit Tuck Shop a few times a month. I'm a big fan of the Thai Chook (Chicken) Curry Pie, and my friends swear by the Macaroni and Cheese Pie special. The pies are great fresh out of the oven and the place is open late, even on weeknights. Bring your friends--it's worth the trip.

This probably sounds absurd but I only came here for the dessert. I'm a huge fan of Lamingtons after I tried it at Bluestone and I figured the Tuck Shop probably had them too. I'll be frank they weren't as good as the ones at Bluestone BUT were significantly cheaper and bigger. They're probably double the size. They took it out of the fridge so I assume keep it refrigerated though the ones at Bluestone weren't refrigerated. Either way both are great but if you want a more expensive but tastier one go to Bluestone and if you want something that's still tasty but not as fancy go to the Tuck Shop. The main reason why Bluestone was tastier for me was because it actually tasted like sponge cake because it wasn't refrigerated (but again don't get me wrong both are great)!

I think I've had the steak, the lamb, and the thai curry pie here and all three were good. I usually get the brussel sprouts/broccoli too. The service is hit or miss and prefer to take out, because it's a bit cramped and dark inside.
These are great for potlucks.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0Jan 8, 2015Previous reviewSausage Roll
One thing I miss about England are the sausage rolls. Tuck shop has them and the pork & sage is fantastic. It's flaky and meaty. Thinking that pies were having a moment, I found out that tuck shop's actually been around for 12 years. Here's to 12 more. Cheers.
