Impressions from THE ISLAND BUS screening at Agia Paraskevi last night
THE ISLAND BUS travelled to Athens again.
It was again a rewarding experience to share the story of Saeed and Tilos with an audience and discuss the inspiration the film can give to people living in Greece today.
I am happy that THE ISLAND BUS manages to inspire thoughts and discussions about what I would call our “human condition” and how we relate to the events around us.
The Q&A ranged from questions of how an island with a population of 400 relates to an influx of desperate newcomers who have just escaped death and war to questions of how racism develops – and how it can be answered by natural curiosity and a genuine interest in and compassion for the life of the others.
And of course, there were members of the audience who have visited Tilos and came to reminisce about an island where they found something special that inspired them.
Here is hoping that with THE ISLAND BUS this inspiration can travel further and move more people to reflect about what place hospitality and compassion have in our world of today and how we relate to the people around us wherever they come from.

Impressions from THE ISLAND BUS avant-premiere @ Goethe-Institut Athen, 15th September 2014
Still feeling a bit light-headed here from all the excitement of the last days: it’s been a wonderful avant-premiere for THE ISLAND BUS at Goethe-Institut Athen on Monday night. For all of you who couldn’t be with us, here are some impressions of the event.
Since it cannot be said often enough, here is also a BIG, HEARTFELT THANK-YOU to you sweet people on THE ISLAND BUS team who have helped us so much behind the scenes with getting the film to this event! No matter how many times this sentence has been used before: without your help and contributions, making this film would not have been possible. There simply wouldn’t be a film.
So while we got to bask in the audience’s applause and appreciation – and occasional irritation – of our film, we pass the praise right on to you. Lots of gratitude to Anja Dehghan, Mike Dehghan, George Cameron Geddes, Dimitris Giannourakis, Fiona Cairns, John Sackey, Ali Murray, DJ Badre, Thomas Mangano, John Bartlam, Dennis Kelly, Aristotelis Chatzifountas, Panteleimon Logothetis, Xenia-Irini Logotheti, Antonis Makris, Konstantinos Makris and Viola Welker!!!
BIG THANK-YOU also to those who let us share their stories in THE ISLAND BUS: Saeed Nouri, Menelaos Karageorgiou, Svetlana Levchenko, Marta Pjetri and of course our ISLAND BUS driver Pavlos Charalambakis!!
We did raise a glass to you and your contributions!! Μπράβο!!
And THANK YOU so much Kostas Spiropoulos and Chara Lampidou for all the support throughout the years, Sofia Michailidou for the amazing Greek-German hospitality at Goethe-Institut, Vicky Trachani for the smooth coordination of the PR, Nikos Dimitrakakos for light and sound, Vangelis Patsialos for the images you can see on this page and everyone at Goethe-Institut Athen, Storydoc and Aegean Docs for a wonderful and memorable event! You rock!
