One of the fundamental principles of continuous improvement is that it is continuous. Is this really necessary? Surely when something is improved, that’s the end to it! Not so say Nick Rich and Dennis McCarthy authors of Lean TPM.

Nick Rich of Cardiff University Business School explains. Reducing waste to improve efficiency doesn’t happen over night. It takes discipline and focus to get the system, approach and learning processes hooked up with the strategy of the business.

In their book they have set out how Lean TPM can be used as a delivery mechanism for winning strategies. It is not just a marriage of operations and maintenance under a supply chain banner. It is a way of aligning all functions under a single change agenda. The synergy created by combining the two well known methodologies delivers a top down and bottom up partnership capable of guiding organisations to deliver market leading capability. Leading the customer agenda is the holy grail of business strategists but is a moving target. The relentless increase in customer expectations and competitive capability ensures that only those with the highest operational capability can hold that position for any length of time. Lean TPM sets out a practical set of tools and techniques based on the experience of those organisations who have done so. Organisations who continue to do so to keep their competitive edge. So what do the authors feel they have achieved in writing this book.

Dennis McCarthy: “We set out to raise understanding of what is possible so that managers can select the right technique for their current position on the journey to world class. You can always do better but I think we have achieved that.” Nick Rich: “That’s right, I feel that we’ve set out a practical route map to help the reader to evolve their production system, management approach and learning processes so that they connect up with the strategy of the business.”
