Municipal pool opening Saturday

            Thanks to a lot of preparation work being done over the last few weeks, the Cuba Municipal Swimming Pool will open on Saturday as scheduled.

City makes truck turnaround fix, looks to hire new EOC director

            Following a previous discussion in April, the Cuba City Council learned on May 7 that a compromise had been reach and a new deterrent to prevent big trucks from turning around at the Medows Subdivision had been installed. Alderman also agreed to begin looking for a new emergency director.

Viva Cuba holds 40th annual Trash Bash

            On Saturday, May 4, Viva Cuba held its 40th annual Trash Bash. This year, volunteers gathered early in the morning at the Viva Cuba Garden at the corner of Highway 19 and Route 66 to clean up the garden and pick up trash around the city.

New mural underway

Viva Cuba has started work on a new mural, which will replace the River Mural that was on the north side of Master Donuts. Members of Viva Cuba and local artists Shelly Steiger and Julie Brand gathered last week to show off the murals to a film crew for Samantha Brown’s show “Places to Love,” which are part of her series on Route 66. The new mural will feature local outdoor activities.

Multiple people honored with Chamber’s Legacy Award

            During its awards banquet on May 3, the Cuba Area Chamber of Commerce opted to recognize all of those who were nominated for this year’s Legacy Award, which honors the life of a local citizen who has passed away and left an identifiable legacy in this community. The award was presented to the families of Jim Cape, Mary Elders, Steve Mitchell, Lesa Mizell, Darlene Mullen, Rudy Munro, Rockael Stubblefield, and Melba Swope.
