Liverpool Raw Business Spotlight: Matt Murphy - Feel Supreme

1. What is your business and what raw food(s)/product(s) do you sell? What led you to do what you're doing?

My company is called Feel Supreme and our main line of the business is our raw, organic, cold pressed coconut oil. However, we've recently added a range of raw, organic wholefoods such as a selection of nuts, seeds , and different grains. Our pumpkin seeds seem to be popular sellers at the moment!

Feel Supreme was born from a dream of doing something that I love and am passionate about. From a young age, I had a keen interest in the qualities of different foods, and when I found myself in a job in which I had no desire for, I took the plunge and embarked on a 3 year naturopathic nutrition course. But not wanting to carry on in the job for a further 3 years, we started developing our own range of organic coconut oil.

2. Tell us a bit about yourself

I'd love to tell you something exciting about myself, but I think this is a fact-based interview! I'm originally from Old Swan, but moved to Huyton a couple of years ago for a better climate to grow coconuts! I'm a family man, and spend most of my free time with my soon to be wife and 2 kids (I sound so old!) but as any parent knows, hobbies take a back burner but I do actually enjoy the challenge of growing a business.

3. How did you first hear of raw food?

Like I mentioned earlier, I've always had an interest in the properties of different foods, but it was whilst studying naturopathic nutrition I realised the density of nutrients in raw food. The more a food cooks, the more nutrients are lost.

4. Tell us about your own personal health journey and what led you to what you do.

I was brought up on a diet of meat, potatoes and vegetables, but I always wanted to explore further into food. I started looking after my diet when I started training in a martial art a few years back, but my knowledge was limited to conflicting advice found on the Internet. Looking back, at that stage I was probably fit but not as healthy as I could have been. I just needed to make smarter decisions with my diet, which I have done since I studied in the field.

5. Share your favourite health tip or quote.

Purely a generalisation, but I recommend eating a balanced, wholefood meal 3 times and day with a balanced, wholefoodsnack in between each meal. If it's appropriate/ affordable, food should be from an organic source.

6. Where are you based? How can people buy your stuff?

We are based online at the moment, but there are many local shops who stock our products including Maggies Farm, Windmill, Purple Carrot and Barnett's. If anybody would like to get in touch through social media, I’d be happy to point you to your nearest stockist.

If anybody is interested in wholesale opportunities, they can email info@feelsupreme.co.uk

There are some great small, independent, family run companies in this city who work hard to supply us with good quality food. It's important to show our support for these companies to allow them to continue doing what they are doing. Their carrots may be wonky and a few pence more, but that's the price we pay for better health.

Sergei Smoothie

Sergei Smoothie
Still buzzing after a brilliant couple of days. The son of the mother of green smoothies, Sergei Boutenko  was here. In Liverpool! Who would've thought when I first heard of the Boutenko family that I'd be foraging on a small patch of land in Tokky with Sergei himself?! In terms of magical bizarreness it was a moment right up there with discovering the woman I'd been chatting to at the front of the queue for a David Wolfe event was his 'mom'.

It was fascinating to hear Sergei tell the story of how his mother smashed up their microwave with a hammer and started the family on a green smoothie journey that would revolutionise the world of natural health. The event at The Brink has renewed my love of smoothies and taught me about the range of greens available to include in smoothies other than the usual spinach and kale. I've used basil and mint the past couple of days; each with watermelon at Sergei's recommendation. A perfect way to start a hot summer day. I'll be putting my foraging skills to use soon too and plan to regularly use wild edibles in my smoothies, juices and salads. We've not had a potluck since the brilliant Graham Jevon event last year but all this green smoothie excitement has motivated me to plan the next Liverpool Raw potluck. With this amazing weather it HAS to be a picnic.

Mini Magic

Any raw fooder worth their (sea) salt has heard of Kate Magic. Liverpool Raw members have had the privilege for the past 2 years to hear Kate give her Raw Magic talk in Liverpool. Now that I have a little boy, I struggle to think of anything more 'up my street' than listening to Kate share her knowledge about raising children and giving them the best possible nutrients to enable them to fulfil their potential. Kate will be giving a talk about Raising Vibrant Children literally up my street. In my home in fact. If you have children then don't miss out on this opportunity. Friday 12th July. One Lucky Girl

Today I achieved a very special goal of mine: I ate at Pure Food and Wine, NYC. it's a Mecca for raw foodies everywhere and to top it off I also went to One Lucky Duck around the corner for a strawberry almond shake. The food was very nice - I had the three course pris fixe lunch menu: a kale Mediterranean salad, zucchini lasagne and a mallomar for desert. I was surprised at how informal the place was and how friendly and relaxed the staff and general atmosphere was. One Lucky Duck was far from the shiny image I had in my head and far more dinky and eclectic. The 'Rich but not that rich' shake I chose was ridiculously expensive but I had to wrestle Baby Nate for the dregs. It was his first ice cream experience; only the best for my Natey.
