Mucky Paws - Specialist Dog Walking

It’s more than just a walk.

Why choose Mucky Paws?

More than just a walk…

There is more to taking a dog for a walk than just clipping on a lead and getting some exercise. Unlike most humans, all of our dog’s social interactions, hobbies and interests are controlled by us.

Imagine for a moment that someone else told you when you were allowed to watch television, go to yoga class or meet your friends at the pub for a pint. Or you were forced to go to a nightclub when all you really want to do is sit quietly reading a good book. Similarly, every dog will have a different idea of the perfect walk. My job is to allow them access to what they enjoy doing in a safe and controlled way. No harsh handling, bullying or intimidation will be used with your dogs at any time.

How I work...

Dogs need consistency and guidance to learn all we expect them to know, along with careful management and compassion while they are figuring it all out. Tools commonly used by me include comfortable harnesses, long lines (these give your dog some freedom to roam and space to practise getting things right without the worry of them getting it wrong) and rewards in the form of food, toys, games and verbal praise.

There are many reasons you may want your dog walked individually or with just a carefully selected doggy pal. Whatever the reason, I can help. Mucky Paws very deliberately offers a different kind of service to most dog walkers. I specialise in walking dogs who may be nervous, lack social skills, have limited mobility, puppies, adolescents or elderly dogs, or dogs who just do not enjoy walking in a group.

Quite simply, no dog left behind.

  • Puppies

    45 minute session £25

Puppy sessions are 45 minutes long and are comprised of appropriate toileting (outside and rewarded!), feeding (when required) and playtime (remember this is also educational).

Once your puppy is fully covered by their vaccinations I can begin to add brief excursions into the wider world as well. This comes in the form of practising being calm while having their harness and lead put on, not rushing dangerously through doors and gates, walking on a loose lead and generally having positive experiences with whatever we happen to encounter.

When you first bring your new puppy home, it is great to take a week or two off to enjoy getting to know them and help them settle in. You will then likely have to go back to work or resume your normal routines and this could mean leaving your puppy for longer than they can hold their bladder. It can also lead to them spending quite a lot of time alone rather than having quality interactions that will help them learn and become happy being left to rest when you are not there. Every puppy is an innocent little blank slate just waiting to be moulded into an adult dog that will, we hope, be a joy to share our home and lives with. Every single experience they have is important to their development. Make sure the right people are helping your puppy learn what is expected of them during this critical time.

  • Adolescent Dogs

    45 minute session £25

Adolescent dog walks are fundamentally the same as an individual adult dog walk. The main difference is even more emphasis on consistency and safe management of your dog during a time when their hormones are running wild and they seem to basically forget everything you have ever taught them.

Exercise is carefully managed to protect easily damaged growing joints, while also being aware of the frustration that can build and turn into social issues if they are not getting the right mental stimulation. These months of teenage rebellion are tiring and often disheartening for owners who have worked so hard to give their puppy the best start. With kind and consistent handling however, you can steer them through it. Let me help you do that.

  • Buddy Walks

    45 minute session £20

A 45 minute walk where your dog can enjoy the company of a carefully chosen doggy companion.

If your dog is generally very sociable this will likely be their best option when possible. Many other dogs on individual walks may also be able to benefit from a Buddy Walk given time and careful introduction, however this will never happen without your express permission.

If you would like your dog to be considered for the Buddy Walk rate please let me know. I will then assess how easily they can be paired up with another dog. If I feel they are suitable, then any time there is another dog they get along with available, I will walk them together. I will then let you know you are receiving the reduced rate for that walk.

  • Limited Mobility & Golden Oldies

    45 minute session £25

A 45 minute excursion that allows gentle physical exercise, environmental enrichment and company.

Being old or physically less able does not mean our dogs do not want to have fun. It simply means we have to adapt to their changing needs. This can be done in many ways; takings things at a slower pace, going to a variety of places to give them different experiences, playing mentally stimulating games like “Find It!” or just spending some time having a fuss.

If more appropriate, their session can take place mostly or entirely at your property.

  • Special Behavioural Needs Dogs

    45 minute session £25

A 45 minute walk in surroundings appropriate to your dog’s individual needs. Your dog will be managed in a way that offers continuity with your own walks and training/behaviour modification program. Their safety and enjoyment will be my top priority.

Have you been told by other dog walkers that your dog is too difficult or disruptive to be included in their group walks? Perhaps you have considered hiring someone to help you but are concerned your dog wouldn’t enjoy the experience. Maybe you have invested significant time, effort and money into working with a behaviourist or trainer. If so, you will no doubt want your dog walker to have the necessary level of skill and experience to maintain what you have achieved. I can work alongside you and your chosen professional to become part of your dog’s team, managing your dog so they can enjoy their walk. I have had lots of guidance from a behaviourist with my last few dogs and it has made a huge difference to our quality of life. I understand how hard it is to make progress, how easily it can be undermined and how rare it is to find someone you can trust to walk them for you.

About Me

Kathryn Norton

I have worked with animals since leaving school. My first experience was volunteering at our local animal rescue centre when I was just 16. There I learned a lot about basic animal husbandry and after six months I was turning up so reliably they offered me a job. It was then I realised my passion for animals could actually become a career.

After two years getting as much practical experience as I could, I realised my education needed to catch up. I embarked upon a two year full-time course in Animal Management at the Berkshire College of Agriculture, passing my National Diploma.

During a period of work experience at a boarding kennels as part of my course, I was offered a job when I graduated. I gratefully accepted and worked hard getting my hand in again. I enjoyed this job very much but wanted a new challenge and the luxury of spending more time with my own dog. So I decided to set up my own dog walking business.

Over the years I have had the pleasure of caring for many amazing dogs for many truly wonderful owners. Some of them have been kind enough to write short Testimonials for you to read. I have also been fortunate to count some very special dogs as part of my own family. They have all taught me something different and given me new insights on a regular basis.

Me and my dog, Wallace.

Currently my husband and I live with Jack, a Norwegian Buhund who came to us at a year old after being returned to his responsible breeder when his first owners circumstances changed. Like every dog, he has taught me something new. Jack has limited energy and for me, someone who has made a living out of walking, having a lazy dog has been a challenge! He also loves dogs, but is a frustrated greeter which is a struggle we are finally making some excellent progress with.

My previous dog owning experiences include Wallace, our wonderful Collie cross German Shepherd who was badly abused before being rescued and coming to find us. He made my heart burst with love and was such a sweet, special boy. He was amazing at reading other dogs and would help other dogs learn to be comfortable around their own kind.

Anya, our beautiful German Shepherd, was our first experience in raising a puppy (and boy what an experience it was!). She was a fantastic girl but we had to work really hard to help her overcome the challenges of modern life and her own sensitivities. Adolescence was tough for a large, excitable dog who wanted to be right in the middle of whatever was going on.

It has been in helping her that I have been lucky enough to get to know the wonderful Ainsley Proctor. A talented, kind and hugely dedicated COAPE qualified Animal Behaviourist, she has guided me patiently towards a beautiful new level of understanding about how dogs think, feel and make decisions. A sad loss to the dog world, Ainsley has stopped working as a Behaviourist to spend more time with her own dogs and return to her previous career.

Me and my dog, Wallace.
