I am a litigation lawyer and partner with the firm of Almy & Thomas in Torquay, a long established firm of solicitors, which is a busy high street practice. I was born in the Autumn of 1955, I am 55 years of age and married with two grown up children. I come from Blackburn in Lancashire and I moved to Devon in 1980. I studied law at Brunel University where I obtained an LLB. My early interest in the law was as a result of a relationship with an uncle who was a judge in Scotland (now retired). I had developed a very strong relationship with him. He was and is (aged 92) an intelligent man with a great sense of humour and sense of fun and it occurred to me in my teens that if he could be a judge then there was no reason why I could not. I did not see him as being a highbrowed intellectual. I now know that he is a very intelligent man but he still has his sense of humour. I have been a solicitor since 1986 when I first qualified and practiced in Exmouth, Devon. I was left to run a satellite office for a large firm of Exeter solicitors and I suddenly realised that I could do this job. I have specialised as a litigation solicitor for many years, initially trudging around the criminal courts learning my trade. I now have a busy litigation department. I specialise in divorce and high value accident claims. I also have a niche area of practice in that I quite often bring claims against the Devon & Cornwall Police Authority. My department also deals with contract and building disputes and employment law but we pretty much turn our hand to any area of litigation. I have a number of interests from the sporty. I am an obsessive swimmer. I cycle, run (or probably jog) and I go to the gym. Otherwise I have an interest in decent wine, but not too expensive - half the fun is getting a good wine at a knock down price. I also love people and socialise a great deal.
