Patricia Lynch BA (Hons) Fine Art (1st)

The majority of my practice involves the use of egg tempera and gold leaf on gesso panels. Many years ago, I was taught the ancient techniques of egg tempera and gilding. My training at that time, involved painting icons on handmade gesso panels and allowed me to gain experience in using pure pigments and gold leaf application. Even though I loved painting the icons, I always felt that the medium could be used in a more contemporary way and I have spent many years revisiting and exploring this beautiful medium, using multi-layered glazes, combined with drawing into the gesso surface of the panel. My work sometimes has an abstract quality and my inspiration is derived from the landscape, nature, the human form and collections of meaningful objects.

Although egg tempera has a tradition of being used in a very disciplined way, portraying religious devotional imagery, its luminous quality, brilliance of colour and sensual surface, make it an exciting and wide-ranging medium for a more contemporary approach. I hope you will enjoy seeing a selection of work done over the years, which shows my journey with this challenging but versatile medium.
