RESEARCH OVERVIEW
The research laboratory of Dr. Peter Light is located in the Alberta Diabetes Institute, University of Alberta. We research ion transport processes controlling cellular excitability, utilizing a combination of electrophysiological, biochemical and molecular techniques to study the biophysics, physiology and pharmacology of ion channels and exchangers at the molecular, cellular, organ and whole organism levels.

Currently, we are studying the following:

  • The ionic and metabolic events that lead to cellular dysfunction in the heart and endocrine pancreas.

  • Design and development of multifunctional small molecules for the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias.

  • Common gene variants in ion channels and susceptibility to type 2 diabetes and pharmacogenomics.

  • Ion transport pharmacology.

  • KATP channel function and molecular pharmacology.

  • Sulfonylurea pharmacology and safety.

  • Molecular engineering of islets to improve post-transplant function and survival.

  • Optogenetic applications for diabetes and other diseases.
