10 mile open time trial cancelled
Very sadly we have had to cancel the Wigmore CC Bill Philbrook Memorial this year due to multiple roadworks on the course, poor road surfaces and a very low number of entries.
I suppose after 36 years of uninterrupted promotions we have been lucky and it had to happen at some time.
As a result we will be moving next year’s 25 from our traditional venue Chilham to an alternative course hoping for better luck and bumper entries!
Thank you to all who did enter this year and apologies for not being able to run the event as planned.
- 8Finally “Please support your local events” enjoy the ride and stay safe! ♀️

75th Anniversary Awards
Our 75th Anniversary Awards evening was on 18th November 2023 and saw the return to the location where the was club founded in 1948 – the Wigmore Smallholders Club.
A lot of hard work goes into delivering any club event, so thanks must go first to Helen Masters, Social Secretary and Kirsty Wastall for shouldering the burden of the work with support from Mike Finch, Bob Philbrook and Martin Trice. Thank you.
Following our meal, we were thrilled to have cyclocross legend Ian Field speaking about his career as a cross racer and his journey to get there and his new role as coach at http://veldcoaching.co.uk. Our host for the evening Bob Philbrook ensured things ran smoothly.
Bob and Jon from the Go-ride section were on hand to announce the prizes as Ian kindly gave them out with a smile and a handshake. Not before some well-earned flowers for Helen and Kirsty for their sterling work in organising the event.
The full list of winners is below but some notable awards are here:
- Steve Harman, Dave Bishop and Marin Stoichkov, Cyclerama Award for completing Lands End to John O’Groats.
- Henry Twynam, “”L’Equpier” rider of the year for being super helpful and supporting younger riders at Go-ride sessions.
- Keith Walker, for a truly amazing tally of awards.
The traditional raffle followed, with our great friends The Bike Warehouse Gillingham donating some awesome prizes.
There was also a special prize paid for by the Philbrook family for introductory coaching vouchers for Luke Anderson’s new cycle coaching venture Luke Anderson Cycle Coaching. Find out more about Luke’s offering at https://lacc.uk. We wish Luke all the very best with his new venture.
It was great that some old club members could attend too, and there was a display of club memorabilia from years gone by.
We hope everyone had a great evening and is looking forward to next years challenges, maybe with a new bike or gadget from Father Christmas, or indeed The Bike Warehouse!

Wigmore CC gains qualified adult Ride Leader
Wigmore Cycling Club has gained a qualified British Cycling Ride Leader.
Club Chairman and Club Ride Secretary Kevin Ford attended the 2-day course held at Cyclopark on 11th and 12th September.
With a range of pre-course learning, classroom, on site and external rides the course covered ride planning, supporting new and developing riders confidence, road skills and, of course, risk assessments!
The training will be used to provide improved experience for the Wigmore CC Developers group and where group abilities are mixed.
Wigmore CC typically provide a Developers (up to 15 miles, 10 mph), Intermediate (up to 45 miles, 13 mph) and Advanced (45 miles and above, 15 mph and above) group rides each Sunday.
Club Rides meet for a 9am start from Rainham Library car park, Birling Avenue, with free on street parking nearby should you choose to drive the start.
All group rides are inclusive with a ‘no drop’ policy and focus on the social aspect of riding, even when the group may be going a bit quicker. For more info, see here.
Wigmore CC also have a strong Go-Ride section for school age children to build cycling skills, along with a range of racing events throughout the year, delivered by a strong group of British Cycling-qualified volunteer coaches. Sessions run term-time only on Saturday mornings. For more info, see here.
Use the Contact form if you’d like to join us for a no obligation taster ride or for more information.
