Thardeep Rural Development Programme

Thardeep Rural Development Programme (TRDP) is a not-for-profit integrated rural development programme. TRDP works with poor and vulnerable segments of society particularly women in the most deprived and remote areas of Sindh Province.
Social mobilization is the foundation of TRDP program. With participation of community institutions, TRDP implements activities under five major themes: 1) sustainable livelihoods, enterprise development and poverty graduation, 2) elementary education with focus on girl’s education, 3) mother and child health, 4) food security and nutrition improvement and 5) disaster preparedness, management, and water & sanitation.

Appreciated work for a best cause, but Thardeep is a province level NGO may please extend projects across the board specially rest deprived areas of district umerkot. We invite you to work in UC walidad in education, health, neutration, climate change, basic needs, poverty eradiction. We need special initiatives from non goverement side in girls education. There was not enough space available for seating. It was very difficult for the children to learn. In a survey, Thardeep Rural Development Programme and UNICEF selected the school for repair and rehabilitation. They constructed two new rooms and provided stationary, sports kits, bags, books, and other items. As we started in the newly constructed rooms and repaired building, the enrollment of the students doubled... 𝑵𝒊𝒔𝒂𝒓 𝑨𝒉𝒎𝒆𝒅, 𝒂 𝒔𝒕𝒖𝒅𝒆𝒏𝒕 of class 3 says the condition of our school was very poor, and we could not study here. Then the Thardeep Team came and reconstructed our school and provided school bags and books. Now, we come daily and are studying with great interest. 𝗔 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲: Latifa, from village Khan Muhammad, district #Umerkot, and her family are extremely poor. They do not own land and were working as sharecroppers on the land of a local landlord. Despite their hard labor, they were unable to make ends meet. To cover their family expenses, they had to take loans and soon found themselves trapped in debt. Latifa says that three years ago, during this difficult time, Thardeep Rural Development Programme provided them with a grant for a cow. Both, she and her spouse took good care of the cow, which eventually gave birth to a bull. Latifa tells that she sold the milk daily, saved the profits, and purchased a grocery cabin for 20,000. When the bull grew up, they sold it for 50,000 and added more items to the grocery cabin. Now, three years after receiving the grant, Latifa has managed to pay off her loans and cover her household expenses from the earnings of her grocery cabin. She manages to save an additional 200 to 300 daily, which she uses for extra expenses such as medicine and other necessities. Latifa expresses gratitude to #TRDP, the Government of Pakistan, the Ministry of PASS, NPGP, and IFAD for the support that has enabled her family to earn a livelihood without laboring on the land of others or taking loans. 𝗥𝗮𝗵𝗲𝗲𝗺𝗮'𝘀 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺: Raheema, from village Gul Mashoori Union Council Shah Alam Shah, district #Matiari, has established a small cattle farm with a PKR 500,000 matching grant received under the GRASP project. Thardeep Rural Development Programme is implementing EU-funded GRASP project in partnership with PPAF and ITC. With the grant, Raheema has installed a solar system, a water pump, and purchased a deep freezer along with four additional goats for her farm. Raheema stores milk and produces yogurt, lassi, and butter, selling about 10 kg per day—twice the amount she sold before acquiring the deep freezer. She has also received training on how to increase sales of dairy products and about animal vaccination. In collaboration with #TRDP, the Government Livestock Department visited her house and vaccinated all her animals. Raheema expresses gratitude to TRDP, ITC, PPAF, and the European Union for the matching grant that has significantly supported her business growth. 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿. Ms. Muzamil is facilitator at the Women and Children Safe Space Center (WCSS), village Tando Nazar Ali, district Khairpur Mirs. Thardeep Rural Development Programme and IRC had established safe spaces to support women who were facing stress and post-disaster-truama after flood of 2022. The 'Safe Spaces' are the place where community women get together and share their feelings with one another. Ms. Muzamil says, 150 women and 100 children used to visit the center for more than a year now. They have received sewing machines from TRDP, which the women use to learn and improve their sewing skills. Some women have mastered stitching and contribute their work to the center. For the children, says Ms Muzamil, awareness sessions are conducted teaching them how to perceive danger and make them safe. Sessions conducted for women include awareness on health and hygiene, mental health. Shama, who is regular visitor at the centre says that they have learned sewing. By meeting regularly the community women have mobilized parents to educate their daughters, and avoid their early marriage. 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻 𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆. Three years ago, a survey conducted by Thardeep Rural Development Programme (TRDP) identified Somji's household in the village of Kale Khan Butra, district #Umerkot, as below the poverty line, scoring 17 out of 18. Somji says, in their village, households scoring between 0 and 16 received grants to establish enterprises such as shops, cattle, and rickshaws. However, those with scores of 17 to 18, like his, received training in skills such as driving, motorbike repair, and electrical work. In 2021, Somji's parents, Lakshmi and Fakira, enrolled him in a three-month driving course offered by #TRDP at the STEVTA - Govt. Mono Technical Institute in Umerkot. After completing the course, he began earning a monthly income of between 30,000 and 35,000 rupees by driving a taxi. Somji mentions that his family has been peasants, working the lands since time immemorial. The local landlord, came to know about Somji's driving skills, offered him a job driving his tractor for 30,000 rupees per month, which Somji accepted. On his free days, Somji drives tractors in other fields, earning an additional 2,000 rupees per day. With the savings from his driving income, he has purchased a cow for 70,000 rupees and two goats for 45,000 rupees. Somji's son is attending school, and they live a happy life. #WorldLaborDay 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝗻𝗲'𝘀 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲: Kareem Bux, village Gul Mashoori, district #Matiari, is one of the thousands of rural workers who have transformed their work into an enterprise with the support of Thardeep Rural Development Programme Karim bux received a matching grant of 500,000 PKR under the GRASP project. By adding additional funds of his own, Kareem Bux purchased goats, three bulls, one cow, a water pump motor, and a solar panel. He constructed a shelter and developed his cattle farm into a flourishing enterprise. He had been rearing animals for a long time, focusing solely on producing milk and butter on a small scale. By utilizing the grant, he has transformed a pastoral activity into an enterprise that not only provides profit but also a sustainable source of livelihood. 𝑷𝒂𝒘𝒂𝒏 𝑲𝒖𝒎𝒂𝒓, 𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒎, 𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒆𝒍𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒚 The household of Pawan Kumar, from village Raja Rasti in #Umerkot district, was identified below the poverty line in a survey conducted by the Thardeep Rural Development Programme (TRDP) three years ago. His parents decided to register him for a motorbike mechanic course 🛠️ supported by TRDP for youths from impoverished households under National Poverty Graduation Program, Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety 🇵🇰. In 2021, Pawan Kumar enrolled in the STEVTA - Govt. Mono Technical Institute in Umerkot for a three-month motorbike repair course. After completing his training in 2022, he opened a shop at Raja Rasti Stop. He purchased motorbike repair parts from a relative and managed to repay the amount in installments over three months. Within two years, his small shop became so profitable that he was saving an average of 25,000 to 30,000 rupees monthly. Pawan is now meeting his expenses comfortably and has saved enough for his marriage ceremony. He also takes care of his parents, and his entire family is content. 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 & 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 #KhairpurMirs: Saeeda Siyal, village Lal Bux Siyal, #KhairpurMirs district, works as a facilitator at the Women & Children Safe Space (WCSS) Center. This center aims to help women and children overcome depression. While men have opportunities for entertainment outside the home, women stay indoors, burdened with household chores and financial worries, which adversely affect their mental well-being. To support these women, Thardeep Rural Development Programme and International Rescue Committee established the center in September 2023. It consists of four components: WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene), Protection, Education, and MPCA (Multipurpose Cash Assistance). Utilizing grants, (which do not need to be repaid) women have started small businesses such as vegetable shops or purchased sewing machines and goats. Students also received bags, books, and other items. Zameera received 25,000 rupees, which she used to buy a sewing machine for her niece, now helping to cover household expenses with the income it generates. Shazia, who lives in Lal Bux Siyal, mentioned that their village had brackish water, leading to disease outbreaks from contaminated water use. She expressed gratitude towards Thardeep and IRC for providing tanks of fresh water. Shiva Mal, who works at the center’s helpdesk, assists women in obtaining CNIC cards from Nadra and refers patients to Murf Hospital. The center provides all necessary emergency contact numbers for convenience. 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 Rozeena lives in Goth Sawan Khaskheli, district #Mirpurkhas. Since 2017, she has been running a business of making and selling khoya sweet. Initially, she was selling milk for only 40 or 50 rupees per KG. Then, Rozeena started making khoya and selling it for 400 to 500 rupees per kg. The shift brought both profit and challenges. Rozeena wooden built kitchen was unsuitable for making khoya, particularly in rainy season. Power outage issues were also a big problem in storing milk and khoya. Rozeena had not enough money to purchase solar equipment. She therefore applied and received matching grant from Thardeep Rural Development Programme under GRASP project. Rozeena utilized the matching grant of 500,000 rupees to improve facilities and operations: she purchased a solar system, materials for packaging, a weighing machine, cooking equipment, and made stickers for branding. She also acquired a large cooking pot (kadhai), essential for producing high-quality khoya. Now, production continues uninterrupted thanks to the new kitchen and kadhai. Rozeena says she is grateful to the TRDP, ITC, PPAF, and Thardeep, which significantly changed her life by providing a matching grant that benefited the home business. 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 & 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 : Kiran, from #KhairpurMirs district, serves as a facilitator at the 'Women & Children Safe Space (WCSS) Center' in the village of Dodo Khan Pal. In her message, she mentions that the people in her village suffered from depression following the 2022 flood. In particular, women were reluctant to leave their homes as water became contaminated and diseases spread. During this difficult time, Thardeep Rural Development Programme and International Rescue Committee established the 'Women & Children Safe Space Center'. Women were mobilized to attend the center, where they communicated about their problems and devised solutions. Sessions on water purification, child protection, and health and hygiene were conducted. Those who attended the sessions applied what they learned, and were pleased to observe improved hygiene practices among the children. Farhana, a resident of Dodo Khan Pal, tells that women at the center received grants to purchase sewing machines. They learned to sew at the center and now contribute to their families' income. The women express their gratitude IRC and TRDP for opening the center, which has enabled them to learn new skills and strive for improvement.
𝗦𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺: Thardeep Rural Development Programme provided solar system at the Basic Health Unit (BHU) Saeed Khan Bhurgri, Tando Bago, district #Badin. According to patients and medical technicians at the health facility, 'the provision of solar system has improved immunization, nebulization, first aid, and sterilization services. Patients feel more comfortable now, and they no longer need to travel to hospital in the far-off town, Nindo, since these facilities are now available within their reach.'" Concern Worldwide
𝗢𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗙𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗿: 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗧𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗪𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵: Ali Dost Brohi, village Muhammad Urs Brohi, district #Mariari, owns a banana farm spanning over 3 acres of land. A couple of months ago, Ali had the opportunity to attend a training organized by Thardeep Rural Development Programme.There, he learned that banana roots, which were previously discarded, could be valuable as they can be processed into fiber. This fiber is sought after by factories and mills. Ali Dost planned to invest in processing banana roots but lacked the necessary funds. Consequently, he applied to TRDP for a financial grant—a gift that is free of cost and does not need to be repaid, designed to facilitate or incentivize performance. Ali Dost received a grant of 5 lakh rupees. By contributing an additional 80,000 rupees of his own, he purchased machinery to begin producing fiber from banana waste and started selling it in the market. Three months later, using the profits from his sales, Ali Dost bought another machine. With two machines running, he hired five more laborers to assist him. This small team, including Ali Dost himself, uses a bike rickshaw to transport banana roots to the facility, where the fiber is manufactured, dried, and stored until it's sold. The liquid by-product is stored in drums to be used as an organic fertilizer on the banana crops, yielding results comparable to commercial products like phosphate and urea. In a following message, Ali Dost expresses his gratitude to the European Union, PPAF, ITC, and Thardeep for the matching grant, which has significantly increased their profits.
